US nurse looking to relocate to OZ needs assistance

Published

Hi I am a US nurse with 2 years of med/surg experience looking to relocate to oz within the next couple of months. I have done lots of research concerning visa, registration. No agencys seem to be replying to me. Would just like some advice from anybody who has done this transition before? How you did it? What the work schedule will be like? How it is transitioning? THe process in general. Thanks so much!!! Any response will be greatly appreciated!!!!

I hope you are in the process of applying to our National Nurses Board, because it may take some time to be registered as a nurse. http://www.ahpra.gov.au

Royal Melbourne is hiring :) :)

It will depend on your visa how long you can work for one hospital or if you need to work full time. Look into that but any nursing agency will know the limitations of each visa. You need to have your visa info for the nursing agency or a hospital. Also make sure your registration is sorted or they will not look at you.

Most of the wards work 8 hr day shifts AM 7-15.30, PM 13.00-21.30 and a 10hr night 21.00-7.30. The double time ensures lunch breaks and education. Most posts are rotational so you will work a variety of AM & PM for a few weeks then Nights if you are working for a hospital ward. However if you are working agency you can be more picky and put in your availability.

God, I DREAM of a 4:1 ratio! What bliss!!

I am trying to apply for the visa first.. then do the registration.. then get a job that is what they recommend. just a lot of paperwork!

Takes time as well.

Many people are telling me the whole process takes about up to 6 months.

I think you will find the current situation with AHPRA registration as a nurse may take longer

CRAPRA more like it. As much as I love the national nursing, I hate that you can't transfer inter-hospital as easy as you could before!

At our hospital in South Australia they do a mix of 8 hour AM & PM, 10 hour nights, and 12 hour shifts. But don't come to Adelaide, it's the orifice end of Australia. Stick to the East Coast IMO.

Seawitch is right about CRAHPRA (which I'm now going to have to use widely!) - they seem to have no idea what they're doing or how to do it, so starting the registration process as early as possible would be your best bet.

I'm on the east coast, so have no opinion to express about the vast expanse of Aus to my left ;)

I am looking to work in the east coast.. the sydney area.. Im in the process of doing my registration but i have seem to have hit a bit of a problem. I have the statement of service that they require from Human Resources at my current job, but they are asking for my most recent employer to sign my CV and state that it is correct. I asked HR and they said they don't verify resumes, and my current manager seemed hesitant about signing it as well, seeing as ive only worked for them for the past year and my resume details more thorough experience then that. Any suggestions on what i should do???
