update on UK TO USA

Published

noticed that there are old threads resurfacing on the immigration from the uk to the usa, so thought that with all the newbies on the site and us oldies who have done it all and are now settled, will start all over again. some of the information has changed so much because of the retrogression and the state of the american economy, the disasters in the areas where you might have been going, and of course the new president that they are going to have. also, theres some of us who have completed the agency thing or come on our own, and we all have different experiences. its really difficult to translate the differences between some things but will try to help, as will madwife, betty boop, silverdragon, rgn1, sue, letina etc, etc

dropped you all in here now havent i ?

life continues for me in the us, with thanksgiving day, i never realised until i came here how big it is for the americans, i didnt even know the full history of the day, i used to think it was the same as our thanksgiving harvest days back home. its bigger than christmas for most americans, and its a great day, even if we dont celebrate it, i always work to let my american co-workers have it off, after all i want christmas off.

Two years we were in London for Thanksgiving it was like any other day. It was weird for me.

Yes we dont celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK

Cariad and all,

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me out with a few facts, as I've read some of your previous posts and you seem full of really useful advice:)

I'm a British citizen currently doing my nurse training but hoping to work in the US (My dad and his wife are both US citizens, so I'm not too worried about getting a visa as they are currently sponsoring me for a green card).

My dilemma is...I'm studying adult branch nursing at the moment but would love to train as a mental health nurse, however I've heard that mental health nurses aren't recognised in the states. Is this true?

Do you know of any bridging programmes in America, for example to 'top up' my mental health nursing in order to meet licensure requirements? If yes, how long do they take/are they expensive?

I'll be heading to California when I get my green card, in case that makes a difference (I know req's vary from state to state)

And lastly, how are you finding the US? Is it better than the UK?

I hope you don't think I'm cheeky for asking you, you just seem to know what you're talking about so thought it would be worth a try. Thanks in advance for any replies:)

Hi,

I did my training in the uk project 2000 qualified in 2002(adult branch). was desparate to move to USA. I could not meet the requirement but agency gave me a name of university i could use to make up the hours which i completed and have now written my nclex and passed it. If you look at there is a forum which is called making up hours i posted the name of the university. I did my registration process with New Mexico. Just waiting to move now.

cacha, good for you, where theres a way theres a will, it must be difficult for the uk nurses who are now trained in only one direction, its as if the uk have deliberately stopped the nurses who want to emigrate being able to do so.

Can you post a link to this forum? Is it in the student section (I didn't see it on a quick look)? Thanks.

Nightmare, thanks, but I don't think that's it, as I don't see that "Sunshine97" posted in it. That's a thread that I started a few months back when I was looking into everything.

I think it was probably this thread: https://allnurses.com/forums/f124/making-up-hours-you-may-interested-240216.html , which is one I read a while back. I don't know how helpful that'd be for nurses who don't live in NZ though.

Hey everyone-

I was wondering if you could lead me in the right direction in terms of the process of becoming a nurse in the US. My mum graduated from Cardiff University (I believe..) and worked as a nurse for a few years until giving it up to raise my siblings and I. My family and I moved to the US about 13 years ago and my mum is now looking to get back into nursing. She's been trying to get information but everyone has been giving her the run around, so I thought as a nice surprise, I'd try to find out for her. We live in California, as I know the req's are probably different from state to state. Does she have to start all over, or is there a way to take some sort of refresher course and become validated as an RN here? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd love to help my mum out after all she's done for me :icon_hug:

Thanks very much,

-Ben

Hi Ben, Welcome to the site

I would suggest you check out the sticky called Primer to working in the US in the International forum. Is your mum with you in the US?

Yes, she is. We all moved over when we came to the states. I'm sure she's always thinking of home though, as all of our family are still over there. I'll check out the sticky, thanks!

If anyone else has any info, don't be shy :D

The issue is your mom has been out of nursing for over 10 years, she needs a refresher course which you need a RN license. Since she doesn't have recent experience she would not qualify for the NCLEX.

Perhaps she should go to a local school of nursing and see how long it would take her to complete the RN program here in the USA.
