update on UK TO USA

Published

noticed that there are old threads resurfacing on the immigration from the uk to the usa, so thought that with all the newbies on the site and us oldies who have done it all and are now settled, will start all over again. some of the information has changed so much because of the retrogression and the state of the american economy, the disasters in the areas where you might have been going, and of course the new president that they are going to have. also, theres some of us who have completed the agency thing or come on our own, and we all have different experiences. its really difficult to translate the differences between some things but will try to help, as will madwife, betty boop, silverdragon, rgn1, sue, letina etc, etc

dropped you all in here now havent i ?

i'm hoping to get into nursing school in cali from the uk :/

Good luck, Will be expensive and no guarantee you will be able to stay once finished to work. Suggest a good read in the international forum. May be cheaper doing your training in the UK

Thank you, the expense isnt an issue, i've always wanted to at some point study abroad..i'll take my chances, and if all else fails i'll try and marry an american! haha :p

UK University is bit different than US Colleges. My son attended school in the UK, they had to make allowances and he didn't get his grades until almost 2 years later.

The big difference University is 3 years and one only studies their major in the UK, where as in the US you have to take so many liberal art classes ( history, art, music, etc) along with your major.

I've already got my BSc, i'm applying for the direct entry MSN for non-RN's with a bachelor degree in a field other than nursing programs.

I have a Bachelor degree from a UK university in Biomedical Sciences.

Good luck, will be a good program, I hope you can use your MSN in the UK !

A MSN with no experience will not give you a step ahead in the retrogession so I am assuming you are planning on working in the UK.

Well i've applied to a program that gives both an BSN and a MSN upon completion, which will take around 3 years.

I'm hoping Obama would have lifted the retrogression by then..if not then i'll take my chances on the green card lottery, as i really want to work in the US after completion of my program.

Taking chances on lottery is a big risk and if you do apply you will not be able to stay in the US and wait. Up to you but as long as you keep up to date on what is happening then you can plan. Who knows what will happen in 3 years but remember retrogression has already been ongoing just over 2 years and there are already many waiting in the queue and doubt they will have a open door policy as they still have to look after their own citizens

Not sure where you are from but not everyone can qualify for the greencard lottery. California are also having a lot of economic issues at the moment will be worth reading up about it

Well I have a good chance of getting the green card via the lottery as i was born in Abu Dhabi.

Plus my father is getting a green card as he works for the American department of state..so if all fails, i'll just wait for him to get an American passport and then just get citizenship through him!

And i see it as any chance is a good chance :)

I'm not putting all my eggs into one basket, i'll just take it as it comes.

Will be quicker to get GC with occupation than wait for your father. He has to be a PR for 5 years before he can get citizenship and then it is approx another 10-15 years for children to get one on their petition. I would probably say start trying for the green card lottery now and keep applying. I have known some get it the first time they try where others try every year and do not get it.

Good luck. Not sure if you have considered looking for a job with the BSc you have already and then think about nursing later

My father is getting a special immigrant visa because he works as a senior advisor of petroleum for the American Department of State within Iraq.

I'm a nurse advisor for a medical device company and have been working within a clinical setting for almost 5 years.

I'm ready to study nursing, if i cant get a green card or sponsorship after, then it's not the end of the world, i'll just return to the UK and get a more specialised job within the industry i am already in.

I'm keeping my options open and i'll see where it takes me.
