UofA MEPN 2021

Published

Hi there. I am applying for the UofA MEPN 2021 program this Fall, and thought I'd open up this thread for others also applying at this time.

A little about me - I was originally going to apply for the 2020 program, but delayed it a year due to the birth of my youngest in late 2019. I have quite a bit of healthcare experience before the birth of my children, as well as volunteer experience in other areas. I haven't taken the HESI yet, but my stats are 3.5 (last 60), and 3.8 (prerequisites). I have a Bachelors degree in Biology, and am *really* hopeful to make it into this MEPN program. My goal is to be a Nurse Practitioner ? One of my aspirations is to serve impoverished communities in third world countries.

Would love to hear from others, and open up dialogue regarding questions and general advice.

Best of luck to all the 2021 candidates!

I found housing I like in Phoenix and decided to sign a lease and plan to move regardless if classes are in person or not!

I’m about to do the same! I was originally thinking of living in Phoenix but Oldtown Scottsdale sounds intriguing LOL... does anyone have any input? I’m from California so I’m still figuring out what the cities out there are like.

I've lived near tucson my entire life, but that means I also have experience with the Phx area. Scottsdale is pricey and is known for being so. Gilbert is a really nice area in my experience (check out how cute downtown Gilbert is!). Phoenix itself you could obviously live in, but many college students who go to ASU live in Tempe. There are a lot of options around Phx depending on the drive you want. Luckily, there are lots of highways connecting the city. Any Phx locals want to chime in?

Also for MEPN, does anyone know where to find a schedule of the entire year? like when our breaks are and how the semesters are split up?

Specializes in Nursing.

This is what some of our friends have posted earlier for MePN schedule. Not sure what was changed due to COVID-19. Please validate and plan accordingly things could have completely changed as well.

I live in this area so my 2 cents ?

For BSN-IH : the area is really developing and fast growing, there are less student housing compared to Tempe, but plenty of housing available.  If you live in Tempe and want to commute to Gilbert the traffic is low as you are going against the traffic. AFAIK, your public commute options are limited.

If you have kids - there are really good day care centers in this area

For MePN - if you are going INTO phoenix from any suburbs the traffic is super crazy in AM and vice-versa in PM so plan for that. There could be more public commute options here if you don't want to drive.

Hi! Current MEPN student here. Unfortunately, you don't get a schedule with specifics until just before the semester. We were given that same photo above when we began but it completely changed due to COVID and hospitals/school allowing clinicals. So, that schedule isn't too helpful.

The breaks are determined by if you pass your Kaplans on the first attempt. If you do, you potentially can get a 2 week break between L1 & L2 (Summer 2021 - Fall 2021). Obviously you will get a Winter break and that falls somewhat along the UofA's academic calendar. I believe last year if you passed the kaplans the first time and didn't have to attend the retakes you had a few extra days on top of that break. The shortest break is the one upcoming for my cohort (L3-L4, Spring 2021 - Summer 2021) and it is a week if we pass the kaplans, a couple days if we have to do retakes.

Thanks - I am more interested in the overall schedule, not the daily one posted a few posts above. So I'm not sure if there's an academic calendar you could share to give us an idea of where that potential 1 or 2 week break is?

Also! I know the CON wants things to be in person again, but do you see that happening anytime soon? I imagine we would probably be online at least through Summer since some of the students probably won't be able to get vaccinated until Summer...What do you think?

Here is the academic calendar for the Summer:

https://catalog.arizona.edu/2020-2021-academic-calendar

And here is the calendar for the rest of the program:

I think it will probably be online for the first Summer session - but this is just my personal guess, hopefully I am wrong and you're never fully online, ha! While we have started meeting more in person for skills labs and simulations, we are still not meeting for lectures. The UofA is in stage 2 of re-entry, so classes with less than 50 are allowed to meet, but possibly when they move into stage 3 it will happen for you guys! I'm hoping that is at least mid Summer/fall. MEPN students were given the opportunity to get vaccinated through Banner so many of us did, I imagine they will offer it to the incoming cohort as well considering we are all front line workers.

For the academic calendars you shared, I don't know if MEPN is considered a 7 week or a 10 week or its own kind of schedule for Summer, which is where the question really lies - and does it follow regular Fall/Spring schedule then? Thanks for your help!

I actually hope the classes are online LOL. this way, I can likely keep my job that is also online these days.

LOL, great question! It's the 13 weeks (Which ends around the time the "2nd 5 week" does). So ours last year was supposed to end on the 12th but I passed the Kaplans the first time so I was done on the 7th.

This is the schedule I received from one of the advisor. I think MEPN goes by Levels (4 levels in total) including Summer, fall, Spring, Summer semesters. I am not sure how it might change due to online & COVID.
