University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and to the field of nursing. Has anyone gone to this school and if so, what did you think?

I live in San Diego, CA, and there is an online program that this school offers. I'm 3 prerequisites away from applying to the school, with a start date of August 08. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nicole

Congrats of all of you who just got into OU! I just started reading this board and plan on applying to OU for Spring 09. I only have one class left to take (Human Growth & Development) that I am taking as a CLEP in 2 weeks. I am really nervous about getting in. I got into City (2 year waiting list) and denied by National. I really would love to go to OU. I am anxious to start nursing school soon since this is a career change for me. I just need to finish the application for the Oct 1st deadline then play the waiting game!

Good luck to you!

I understand how you feel, I got rejected by my CC (twice) since they only do it on GPA, got put on the "alternate list" at Loma Linda, but got accepted to OU. Which all in all turns out to be perfect for me!

Loma Linda did call about two weeks before OU started, and I happily told them, no thank you. He has a plan and there is a reason I didn't hold out for Loma Linda, and I feel good about my choice. And so will you!

National doesn't know what they're missing out on! :) Again, good luck to you!!! The anxiety is well worth it, once you get that acceptance email/letter. :) It'll happen.

Hi,

The program is extremely accelerated and is a ton of work but it is do-able. I do not have any kids yet but I do know some mothers are getting by...with the support of their husbands of course! First semester you are at school more...2 days for lab and you are required to attend your clinical once a week and you have to go the clinical the day before to pick your patient. Second semester drops down to one lab day with one clinical day with the day before for med-surg but no pre-clinical day for OB.

First semester is a lot easier than second, I feel like I have no time this semester whereas last semester I had time on the weekends. It is a lot of work but if you are good at organizing your time, you will succeed!

My biggest advice I can give would be to consider when you will be doing 2nd semester. The word is that 2nd is the hardest so be sure to take it in a semester that you will have 16 full weeks instead of the summer where you will have only 11 weeks with the same amount of material. As it stands now this semester I have an exam every week...the cohort ahead of me who took 2nd over the summer had 2 exams every week...not fun! Some people failed and were kicked out the program, some had to take pharm over again.

Regarding CLEP double check with the counselors to see what is accepted, etc. You will need to send it the transcript to Grossmont or any community college to give you credit. It was a huge hassle for me so be sure to allow plenty of time to get credit transferred etc.

I hope this helps and good luck!!

thank you somuch

I also need to know how the online classes are....I know you can log in whenever you want but how does it work exactly? how many classes? also how many hours aprox do you need to spend on the comp etc

thank you again

It's pretty intense. I've been way too busy to check out this site but we actually have a calm couple of days here.

I'm only in my first semester so I'm still getting in the groove of things but you are on your computer almost every day. You check into your classes and see what is due. Some have power points and all have alot of reading. Essentially, you are not going to lecture but learning from your readings and materials that they provide online. Most of the quizes and exams are on the computer too. Some are done at home and some are proctored at the Sharp Cabrillo facility. This is also where your labs take place.

Labs are where you learn the hands-on stuff.

It's basically about managing your time and having a good study environment. There are also group projects to be completed in addition to class time.

I would highly advise you to contact Kanessa at the Ou campus here in SD. She is really good at letting you know what you need in order to apply. (pre-reqs and cleps).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the update on how classes are going :). I would appreciate it if any of you would take the time to answer my questions as well.

Since the classes are online, do you feel as though you are teaching yourself most of the material through the readings? If so, do you find it hard to grasp the material without a lecture? I've never taken an online class and am not sure how I would do without actually listening to a lecture, especially since the material is likely not like anything I have been introduced to before.

Do you feel like your instructors are easily accessible and answer your questions in a timely way?

Do you feel as though the program will prepare you for the NCLEX and real world nursing (as much as is possible :))? Are you feeling too rushed at all?

Thanks again!

KT

Yes, you are teaching yourself the material. There is some guidance from the teachers but you need to be self - reliant and disciplined.

The program is still very new and sometimes can be frustratingly unorganized. If you have never taken an on-line course, it would probably be very helpful to take one of your pre-reqs (if you need any) on - line just to get the experience.

I don't know at this point about the NCLEX or real-world nursing. It seems that if you have the perseverance to get through the entire program than you can pass the NCLEX.

14 months beats getting on a 2 year waiting list to start your associates degree.

I have friends that started their pre-reqs way before me and they are still waiting. It is possible that I will have my BSN before they start thier programs.

I am being as candid as I can. This is a tough program. Again, I would come in and talk to Kanessa and see if it would work for you.

thank you everyone

I actually talked to the advisor and I was told I have 6 prereq left....but I wanted to find out more from you how the program is. Also I would like to know how long the labs are ?And do you have to login a certain amount of hours on the comp? or you can do as much as you want as long as everything is done by the due date?

thank you all and please if you have other things you can share please do....I am trying to decide if I am going to do this

thank you somuch

I spent more time on the computer last semester, 2nd sem you don't have mandatory quizzes to do every week. The labs are 2 hours and exams are on lab days which are additional 2 hours. How much you spend on the computer has to do with how you learn.

The majority of the material is self taught so definitely don't skip out on the readings (some people do but they get C's on the test, etc). Some professors video tape lectures, some record mp3s and all of them do power point lectures. The mp3s are awesome because you can listen to them wherever you want and over and over again. When the material is especially tough the profs record something which helps a ton! Also, the profs are very accessible via phone, email and discussion boards. They are constantly checking them and answering any questions. Also, the profs at school that teach lab and clinical are all nurses with masters so they are a wealth of information also and some tutor groups as well on the side.

As far as being prepared for the NCLEX, I think I will be. Every exam is written with questions similar to the NCLEX which is hard to get used to because 2 answers could be correct. I also like that exams are on the computer because that is exactly how the NCLEX is as well.

Although the program can seem a bit unorganized at times (mainly on the SD end with scheduling, etc), overall I think the program is a good one and well worth 14 months.
