University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi All,

I'm new to this site and to the field of nursing. Has anyone gone to this school and if so, what did you think?

I live in San Diego, CA, and there is an online program that this school offers. I'm 3 prerequisites away from applying to the school, with a start date of August 08. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nicole

thank you everyone

I actually talked to the advisor and I was told I have 6 prereq left....but I wanted to find out more from you how the program is. Also I would like to know how long the labs are ?And do you have to login a certain amount of hours on the comp? or you can do as much as you want as long as everything is done by the due date?

thank you all and please if you have other things you can share please do....I am trying to decide if I am going to do this

You are not graded based on the amount of logins. You just need to complete everything by the deadline.

Wannabe07 thanks for taking the time to give your inputs about your experiences at the school thus far! It sounds like your on the road to being very successful. I just wanted to ask you this, do you know of anyone who was admitted with 2 preqs. in progress, and do you happen to know how many applied and were accepted? I'm just trying to get an idea of the chances of being admitted in the fall. Thanks again and good luck!

In my cohort many people were admitted with pre-reqs in progress but since then they have changed the admission requirements (at least this is what I heard) because the delay of official grades caused a big problem with getting people officially signed up for classes, etc. Many people had holds placed on their accounts. But check with the counselors for a definitive answer. In my cohort I believe there were 160 applicants with 75 accepted but I believe the program is gaining popularity and therefore the last cohort accepted had more applicants. If you have a solid gpa for the science courses I think you have a good chance. Good luck!

thanks so much ...you've been so nice to answer our questions

So if I understand correctly 1st semester you went to school 4 days : 2 days for labs 2 hours each when no exam

1 day for clinical...was it for 8 hours????

1 day to get the material for the clinical...how much time would you say?

hahaha Iam just trying to make my case in convincing my husband we can do this

Did you feel that it was a lot of studying ???? or is it something I could do (the studying part) when kids go to bed???

I am so sorry I am asking so many questions

thank you again

Technically you are "in" school everyday with studying etc but you are only "at" school twice a week on the cabrillo campus and one full day of clinical at your hospital for 8 hours and 1-2 hours the day before. Although you are only at the hospital 1-2 hours the day before, you will have to do the research on the information you gathered...it usually takes about 6 hours to do the night before your clinical...its a ton of work but thats a care plan for you. Once you get the hang of it though it won't take you 6 hours.

Personally I need more than 2 hours a day to study, but thats just me. You may find less time more efficient. I am not a night-studier but some people stay up until 3 am every night and get their work done then. You will find a system that will be good for you.

I would tell your husband that it can be done but it will be extremely tough. But that can be said of any nursing program, not just this one. Nursing school is very hard, much harder than any other schooling I've had. At least with this program though its only 14 months and then you are done. And believe me, time flies!!!

Here is a typical week last semester for me so you can get an idea of how much work it was (keep in mind I'm not working and I don't have kids):

Monday: Study 7am-5pm with 1 hour break and a lot of mini breaks

Tuesday: Lab 10-12, usually exam 1-3, go home and not do anything

Wed: Study 7am-5pm...same as Monday

Thur: Same as Mon/Wed

Fri: Lab 1-3, 3-5 pre-clinical, go home and do care plan until about 10:30

Sat: 6am-2pm clinical, go home and crash from exhaustion

Sun: Family/ Husband time...no studying at all!

That sums up my week for last semester however this semester is so much different. Last semester I had clinical on Saturday but many groups have them during the week, this sem I have it on Monday.

As you can see I studied A LOT but it payed off, I got all A's first semester. This semester I'm shooting for all B's...we'll see how it goes. :D And also keep in mind that is just me...I'm a slow reader, I can't skim to save my life.

Hope this helps.

Wannabe07... Did you feel overwhelmed by the courseload that you were expected to learn in the first term; I say this because I know if you don't get the basics down from the begining, it can be hard to keep up as the class progresses? Basically is there enough time to internalize the concepts learned before moving on to the next concept? I understand studying and passing the test but is there a plenty (hands on) to insure that you have the key concepts down? Thanks again!

To say that I wasn't overwhelmed would be lying but now that I look back at first semester, it was much easier than second semester. But overall you get a good grasp of the fundamentals. To be honest a lot of the basics I have felt are from my prereq courses, anatomy and physiology. If you don't have a basic understanding of normal physiology then learning about disease and the disease process could be difficult. I definitely feel I am prepared from the first semester as it seemed a light went on when I was working with my patients. Did I answer your question?

Hi all~

Does anyone have a reccommendation (number, location) for a CPR class that is needed prior to starting the OU program? I am in San Diego! Thanks, Nicole

There are a bunch on the YMCA website. They are a bit cheaper then the ones at the local hospitals and there were lots of options for days and times.

Hi Everyone,

I am an applicant for the January cohort. Does anyone have information on

how to pay for the program and financial aid available or scholarship resources? I don't imagine many of us have the full tuition to pay in cash at the outset of the program. Thanks in advance for your help.

Since we are second degree bachelor's students, we aren't eligible for grants. To pay for tuition, I applied for stafford loans and private loans. I believe you can find scholarships on fastweb.com, however, some of the ones I looked at seemed to want you to already be enrolled in a nursing program prior to applying for the scholarship. I didn't do an extensive search so I am sure there are ones out there without that stipulation.

I have applied for the January 2009 cohort too and am getting very eager to hear back from them! Any other January applicants tracking this thread?
