Hi! Just thought I would create a new topic for all of us applying to UCLA's MECN program this year ?

I live in LA as well! But for me it's more of who will help financially more! Im not too aware of JHUs program but a full tuition scholarship is beyond AMAZING! No student loans when you graduate is what I dream for LOL!

I was looking into student family housing at University Apartments, which I read is about 5 miles from campus. I live in SoCal (but outside of LA county), so I'm aware of how awful LA traffic usually is.... The main thing discouraging me from wanting to attend UCLA is that I'm not sure if I can see myself driving through the traffic every day ?
I've lived in LA my whole life, and traffic's not as bad as people make it seem. The graduate UCLA housing is pretty close to campus and so right next to UCLA RR and UCLA VA and pretty close to UCLA SM. CHLA, Hollenbeck Palms and USC Keck are the furthest and probably a 45 min. drive. Cedars is maybe a 20 min drive and not bad at all. Overall, not that bad IMO.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!! Will keep this in mind.

I had a non-science arts degree -- definitely don't think you should be discouraged!

My degree is in Journalism. I applied last year and was rejected -- accepted this year. Don't be discouraged! They have a holistic approach. They look at everything -- experience, (volunteer & paid), grades, LOR & essays etc.

Hi Hi! My undergrad was Health Science, my undergrad GPA was not the best (3.5 I think) but I feel like I had a very strong personal statement. They really cared about WHY I wanted to do this. What barriers I overcame and the experience I had in helping others. If you plan to reapply next term feel free to DM and I can give you more input on my end if that helps ?

Hey Pitter Patter. Traffic isn't too bad but expect about a 30 minute drive to campus from family housing, despite the 5 miles. Additionally, just like everywhere in LA there is a homeless issue here as well. You should also know if you have more than one car beware of street parking. Car break-ins are a regular thing. Also, street parking is very limited especially on street parking days and the people who ticket and tow don't play. I'm talking tickets issued at 8am sharp. The apartments are dated BUT affordable and relatively quiet which is nice
@KittyKatzHausIs there anything you could have or wish you had done before starting your first semester as a MECN (studying particular topics, brushing up on science, epidemiology...)?
