University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

Hi ajay8, thanks so much for replying! It feels nice to connect with someone who is in the same boat. I am #9 and also have no idea what to think. I assume applicants on the reserve list won't receive any offers until around June 15, when those who were offered spots have to confirm/decline their offers? The uncertainty is a bit nerve-wracking...but you're right, we just have to wait!

Keeping my fingers crossed...Best of luck! :)

I think the people on the reserve list have a good chance of getting in because interviews were online this year = more out of province people had the chance to be accepted = probably more out of province people reject the offer!

Good luck to everyone on the reserve!:)

How the groups work is...

Groups 1 & 2 start in Maternity and paediatrics and then move on to Med/surg and finish with community/mental health

Groups 3 & 4 start in community/mental health and then move to maternity/peds and finish with med/surg

Groups 5 & 6 start in med/surg and then move to community/mental health and finish with peds and maternity

Groups 3 &4 cannot ESN at VCH as they are not done their med/surg rotation in time for a hiring( which is in August). I believe Fraser Health hires any group (but dont quote me on that).

The group you pick is the 20 people you move with for 2 years in your different clinical rotations and experiences and classes. You do have thread courses throughout the program that you have with all 120 students. I chose my group based on what I was interested in. Remember that you will have to chose your preceptorship without doing your last two rotations so if you really want to try something you're unsure about make sure you don't leave that for your last two rotations. All the experiences are very similar and placements and clinical instructors are great.

Congrats to all that got in, it's a great program. Be prepared for the busiest and most overwhelming first semester you've ever experienced. You will go from knowing nothing about nursing to being in a hospital within 3 weeks of starting the program. You learn very quickly and it goes so quickly. We are almost done year three and I remember being at orientation last year and listening to the upper cohort tell us about the program. Now, I am that upper cohort and will be telling you about it in no time.

To those who are on the wait list, don't give up hope. From what I understood is that at times almost 20 people got off the waitlist but I'm sure it varies from year to year. They accept 120 people and sometimes there are people from the previous year coming back to finish up a course or people who have deferred from the previous year so the numbers can fluctuate a little.

Sorry, I should have been clearer yes people who have deferred/taken a break for some reason/failed part of the first year do come back and that increases the cohort and group size, and I'm pretty sure we've lost 2 this year- so yeah vonkapoko is right in that regard, but faculty have said they accept 120 and not more.

As for group selection, do choose wisely, because it will be your group for the whole program. If anyone you know is also entering the program with you, consider signing up for the same group # because youll get to have some clinical rotations with her/him and you'll certainly have all your classes with that person. A friend and I who were both accepted and started last fall did this, and it's been a really good support system for sure.

What day(s) do you folks have to register?

futurenursling (and anyone else who wants to PM me), I apparently can't PM back... so... email me at [email protected] and I'll get back to you. futurenurseling, I wrote you a great big response, but alas cannot PM it to you unless you email me :(

Hi guys! Would you recommend a stethoscope case?

No case, it's too bulky. You have to drag so much stuff to the hospital (including two pairs of shoes) that you don't want anything extra. And...there's usually nowhere secure to lock your stuff so it's always just laying around in a random closet or on a counter in a room. I use a small soft cloth bag I got from Old Navy and I put my pens, chapstick, stethoscope, papers, etc in it. Hope that helps!

It's a matter of preference I'd say. I got myself a ballistics hard zip case for mine. It's less than 3cm thick and has a pocket inside where I store hospital ID tags, lapel watch, pens, penlight, etc. I really like it for this reason- that everything I need for clinical is in one spot, so I just slip the slim case into my backpack like a book and good to go. Another reason I wanted a case is I was gifted with a somewhat more expensive model of scope- and really didnt want anything to happen to it (Littman Cardiology III). Amazon had some of the cases for $30 or $40 at one point? The one I have looks kind of like this but in black: Medisave Ballistics Premium Cardiology Stethoscope Case - Burgundy

As for saving money, Littman online is MUCH CHEAPER than Uniform Central, and offers engraving on your stethoscope bell etc. Cheapest of all, a lot of people from our cohort may sell theirs at the book sale or on your cohort's facebook group.

UBC grad here. I wouldn't say it really matters what group you're in. It may seem really important at the time but looking back it's no biggie, you'll meet cool people in each group and you get to do every rotation anyways. I agree about the preceptorship comment though...if you are set on peds try and get it done before the summer if possible. I'd say the order each rotation has various pros/cons.

For groups 3&4 Fraser Health will hire you as an ESN...I was in group 3 and got a summer ESN position and my friend who graduated this past year was also hired by Fraser Health (she was also group 3). These positions ultimately landed us the jobs we have now. I cannot recommend the ESN program enough!! It gives you added clinical experience (which TBH is particularly important for UBC students) and pays well. Something to think about as many applications for these positions begin in the fall, when the semester will just be starting. Congrats to everyone who got accepted! :D

For what its worth, I was on the waitlist when I applied in 2009. I was number 19. And I got in. So don't give up hope!

Congratulations to those of you who got accepted!

I will be declining my offer. So waitlisters, have hope!

hii everyone

I would really encourage newly accepted and current students to join our Facebook group "UBC Nursing Cohort 2016-2018". Allnurses is great, but at this stage, FB is a much more fluid form of communication.
