University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

I feel like there's less people posting this year!! :0

So many less people. Maybe less people are applying haha. By the way, it looks as though last years admission average was 79% and the average age was 27.

Haha yes! I guessed there would be more people once the interview style has changed...but I guess we won't know for sure :) there's still about 1350 views on our posts ! hopefully more join in and go through this nerve wrecking process together. :D

I'm wondering where you got that info? I downloaded this year's ppt for admissions and you know, it always says "around 80".

I'm turning 22 soon and my avg pretty close to the admission average... So I guess my supplemental would have to stand out :S but it's hard!

Hey everyone,

So I'll be applying in January 2017 . I am currently a student who has not yet completed a degree and I have very little work/volunteer experience (I'm 21). I am confident that when January 2017 application rolls around I will be applying with a competitive GPA. However, I know that the supplementary application is also a critical part of the application process. I will be dedicating the next year or so to getting as much volunteer and work experience as I can, however I am worried that this might not be enough. Any current students in the program that were in a similar situation? Do you guys have any helpful tips? Any advice would be REALLY helpful :)

Thank you in advance!

Hi everyone!

I applied for the first time last year and started the program this past September. It was definitely one of the most nerve wracking things I've ever done, but SO worth it in the end.

In terms of the supplemental application my smallest section was the Membership part. I wrote about being part of the business association of the community I managed a restaurant in...thats it. I had lots to say in the other sections but don't feel like you have to hit the word max for each section.

For the essay part I was super open and honest. I have had a pretty up and down education trajectory and even though I finished my last degree (political science) with strong marks it wasn't always like that. I took 7 years to finish my degree and got kicked out of one of the universities I went to :p. My biggest piece of advice for the whole supplemental application is to describe what you learned from each position you held or life experience you had and try to link what you learned back to nursing. So, for example, as a server and manager of a restaurant I learned about handling multiple people's conflicting expectations, time management etc. When I got kicked out of school and started volunteering on a crisis line I learned about patience and compassion for myself and others etc. Don't just list but also don't just describe. Show the school who you are as a result of what you have gone through.

Hope this helps! I'll post later about the interview once you all get one!

Just be you!! I couldn't even begin to list all the different backgrounds and experiences everyone in my cohort has. Keep your GPA as high as you can (of course) but also volunteer, work and travel as much as possible. Consider volunteering for a crisis line...the communication skills you will learn are invaluable as a nurse. Other than that, be self reflective and understand what you have learned from your life experiences so far and where you want to go next!

Thank you so much for the advice!:) Do you mind if I message you somewhere else? I have a few questions, if that's okay with you of course?

Hi everyone I'm applying this year and I'm currently in my fourth year at UBC.

I've been following posts from previous years, and it really seems like there's less people posting this year which is a surprise!

How is everyone doing with their supplemental?:scrying:

Hi happy_gal, do you think it's okay if I email you too?! :0

Baldeagle: from a 2015 cohort student.

Are people writing more about "who they are" or just specifically about nursing in this essay?

Sure i dont mind if anyone wants to email me with questions as long as its understood that I can't disclose what the interview questions were.
