University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

it seems like today was a quiet day which seems very odd, did others receive confirmation emails today?

Nada for me. Tomorrow is the judgement day :nurse:

If i get a rejection email tomorrow, i'd just think of it as "April Fools" haha! #nervous

I'm Nervous too! Really surprised that nothing went out today though

i read somewhere that they are offering interviews to 216 applicants. And currently, there are 208. Goodluck to us, beaker1 :)

fingers crossed!

I have a strong feeling that the number of people signed up is incorrect, lol maybe i have become delusional

So I have concluded that aside from my weak average, my lack of volunteer experience in the past two years could be the fact that is holding me back from getting the interview invitation.

I have a 18months old kid and I am pregnant. So it is really hard for me to volunteer... also I have been taking 6 courses a term this year at UBC. But thank god i will be graduating in May. Does anyone have recommendations for a good volunteer job for a mommy? or paid job in related field is better... thanks :)

I completely agree with you that the expectation for volunteer experience is not fair for people who are very much preoccupied with complications in living. Unfortunately, the need for volunteering is very much biased to young people from low income families, or people struggling to make enough money to survive, or older adults who cant compete with young individuals with financially supportive families. In no means is this meant to minimize the accomplishments of people who are in priviledged situations (take advantage of every advantage available), but good deserving people do get left behind by the need to volunteer. As for volunteer experience, I would work with a non-profit in the downtown east side, or get involved in collecting donations for marginalized people...as for me, much of my work was independent clothing/cosmetics drives among my friends and coworkers, and helping children with learning challenges read. Make sure why you do it is impactful and meaningful to you, and it will show (hopefully). Well be getting a lot of people from Syria soon who may need an experienced mothers help? Personally, there is a competitive rift between people from different economic and life backgrounds...unfortunately, it means some people have to work harder (sometimes to the point of defying possibility) to get ahead. my fingers are crossed for everyone waiting on news tomorrow...April 1st was a sad day for me last year, but it just meant I had to work harder/smarter and wait, or find another way to pursue my dream. After reading your description ubcpsychkid, and all you're managing to accomplish at once, you sound like a superwoman regardless of tomorrows outcome.

I also think the number of people registered for interviews on doodle is blown out of proportion, just look at how many people had to double probably triple book because of the confusion with doodle...Im sure administration is overwhelmed with emails right now and hasnt had the chance to calibrate the numbers properly...I really want more good news posts tomorrow!

Thank you... for all the helpful tips and the encouragement. I am so deeply touched by your kind words. I got pregnant young unexpectedly and it took me 6 years to finish my degree. There were some hardships on the way... mostly financial problems and people telling me that I would never graduate or I am being too selfish to pursue my academic goals when I have such young kid. But I don't have any regrets. Last few days have been really tough especially with no invitation to the interview... I really appreciate your comment.

I thought of another opportunity for busy moms. My mother used to take me with her to volunteer at seniors homes. Many individuals living at the homes did not have visitors often, and they enjoyed getting the visits. Seeing babies and small children brought joy to many of them. Maybe this is something you could look into doing @ubcpsychkid :)

I think Nervous In Van said it well: the system is basically biased toward singles, youth and those from more privileged backgrounds. Unfortunately, for some of us the climb is a little steeper. I commend you on finishing your degree, and I especially for taking six classes at once. This may be why your GPA is lower than you'd like, but I still think it's competitive. I could never have done six, and my youngest was 9 when I started university. I also think you are doing your children a favour by putting your education so high on your priority list. Trust me, without an education it can be difficult to provide, and they will benefit from having a mom who has a better understanding of our society and it will encourage them to become critical thinkers.
