University of British Columbia (UBC) BSN September 2016 Applicants

Published

For all of us applying to UBC's BSN 2016 program, let's communicate, share and give encouragement to one another throughout the process.

I just submitted my general UBC application to get the ball rolling early, and it already gave me access to get started on my supplemental application. This is my second time applying, so I hope to do a better job on my app this year and at least get an interview. But I have also accepted that this may not be my fate and I have other options.

Incidentally, to others who also applied previously: I phoned to make sure all my transcripts were still on file, and they are not! UBC admissions discards everything from last year. So I have six transcripts to send in again (including high school). Expensive and time consuming, and also seems a little crazy in the age of computers that they didn't keep electronic copies. But, we do what we have to do... Good luck everyone!

Im very comfy with interviews and presentations... I used to be a pharmaceutical representative for Bayer and did at least 5 presentations a day to medical staff, but this presentation will be very different. Just not a fan of the facebook.

Oh wow! There you go. With that experience, I think you have the skill to nail that interview. :)

I think there has one ethical question in there too... they need to flush out whether or not we bring any baggage not conducive to being a good nurse.

Well, I've been working in the ER (with nurses) for almost 5 years now. If you have any questions, I'm more than happy to ask them.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Whichroad, despite my experience...when something means as much as this, I am nervous. I think everyone is nervous...and if they arent, they either dont care, or havent been in positions like this before...getting into UBC nursing is basically like the nursing version of getting into Harvard, its a world respected school and the competition is fierce, just to the interview stage is an accomplishment.

Thanks for the offer of advice too Whichroad. Thankfully, my ethics are well-in-line with UBCnursing...I just have to work out the best way to express it in 7 minute increments (I have a tendency to go off on tangents when I speak, gotta watch myself on that). With that being said...still nervous, rightfully so. It sounds like you have some great resources and will be well prepared...I really hope to see you in September :)

I don't have much hope in getting in to be honest. I slacked off big time on my last two years at university sending my GPA onto a downward spiral. I wasn't really intending on applying to nursing until late last year. UBC is the only school I applied to because they consider your experience and such. But the competition is really tough.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you want to be a nurse? Aside from money and stability.

Hey Whichroad, there are a lot of reasons why I want to be a nurse...the main reason would be that I love the idea of my work directly helping to improve the quality of other peoples lives... even while working in pharmaceutical sales, I was much less interested in the profits of my medications than I was in hearing how my medications had changed peoples lives for the better. As for you, definitely dont give up hope on UBC... the stuff you put on your supplemental can count for a lot when it comes to being accepted. I spent a year fine tuning my GPA to get into UBC last year, and had a fantastic GPA, but wrote a lackluster supplemental, resulting in no interview...UBC really does pay attention to your life experience and perspective. Keep your hopes up... even in the worst case scenario... you will have a year to tune your GPA and write a spectacular supplemental for next year. If your heart isnt set on UBC, and you dont mind Calgary, they have an accelerated program that is still open to applications (I think). I am keeping my fingers crossed for all of us for what its worth.

That's good to know that you are doing this for the right reasons. Best of luck to you! You better start practising and try to video tape yourself :D

Nada today. Hopefully I will find out something by the 31st. Anyone nervously refreshing the mail box like me? Anyone know other 3 year or 2 year programs in BC other than Langara and BCIT?

Kwantlen has a 2 year post-bach program. It is a mixture of online and in-class courses out of their Langley campus. I've been creeping this forum for awhile so I thought I'd finally join to lend my knowledge. :)

Douglas has a 3+1 program, they have a garunteed admission if the recommended 1st year courses are taken, but are flexible on what it takes to get in on the 2nd year, therefore can be a three year.

Hello nursing hopefuls! I am currently in the ubc program and one piece of advice is get Facebook! It's almost necessary. So much communication amongst your fellow students and upper cohort goes through Facebook. All events, class assignments you need help with, selling of uniforms/shoes/textbooks, groups you're a part of, people post full PDF files of textbooks so you don't have to virtually buy a single text book, your individual clinical groups(1-6) will have their own page as well. I could go on and on forever how important it is! Good luck with your upcoming interviews!

Did they send back confirmation e-mails? Also, has the number of people signed up on doodle changed? I'm assuming they probably dealt with the doubling up issues yesterday (Tuesday). :)
