Hi everyone!
With the deadline only a little over a month away, I figured we all need a place to stress, hope and worry! I just took my first stab at the TEAS and hit the average score of the past few years (335). I have a 3.9 GPA. One pre-req left. Applying for ABSN. I'm scheduled for a second TEAS attempt next month. How is everyone else doing? Drooling over stats as much as I am?? Any interview preparation plans?
Blaker, Can you say why you think it is a better program? J/w because I was accepted to JU as well. I don't know much about the schools besides what was revealed during the interview process. UNF definitely sells their program. I got from it that UNF was the best program in Jacksonville but it was also coming from the current students and they obviously have bias. Thanks!
I know 3 current UNF nursing students(one is almost done) and 2 current JU nursing students and after speaking to both I kind of got an idea of what each program is like. According to UNF they have do more "community" work which sounds great, but they planted a flower garden at a rehab nursing facility as "community" work. I see that as a waste of time (as did the students) not furthering my education or helping the community. The student to professor ratio is much better at JU. I have been told the UNF students felt like a number at times, where as the JU students knew their professors much more personally and vice versa. To the point that durning clinicals the instructor would some times eat with the JU students. I know what you mean by UNF selling themselves as the "best" but since I was accepted to both I have been doing some digging and I can't find any statistics to back this up. In fact JU students have a higher initial NCLEX pass rate and typically find jobs quicker from what I read/heard. I am in no way saying UNF is a bad program by any means just that if you had to compare the too(which I had too in order to decide who's invitation to accept) JU is a better program. Again others may feel different but after doing my research, talking to students, and touring both schools I know who I am accepting and who I am passing on. I just wish JU was a little cheaper but I the old adage I suppose.
See, I don't think planting a flower garden is a waste of time. But, that is just me! It might feel like one when you're buried under so much work in school or when you've dropped off your children at daycare you're paying 800 a month for! But, in the end, I do think those small things count in more ways than we as students get to see. But, to your point, I think it depends on what your goals are and what kind of nurse you want to be. That community portion appeals to me personally over eating lunch with my professor at $50K a plate. . UNF knows their students moan at community and they're pretty vocal about that in the info session. At a private school, I would suspect that you will have smaller classes and a more personal relationship due to those smaller classes. That's what you're paying for, you know? There's a place for both schools. JU is a great program and BEAUTIFUL campus!! Congrats on getting into both!
There are lots of different opinions about the UNF and JU programs. I LOVE UNF! I have a great relationship with all of my professors! We do have community work, but it's not a lot until your last semester. The NCLEX itself was just changed and while many schools saw their pass rates decrease- UNF's actually increased. More material about population-based care (community nursing) was added to the exam. I also have several friends who are at JU. They have not had a good experience. They have had issues with several professors and felt like they were not getting the information they needed to succeed in those areas of nursing. Again, some people will love our program and others won't. I think you will get that at any nursing school you choose to attend.

I got in to UNF. Yet I also got into JU. 99.9% sure I'm going with JU I know students at both and JU is a better program IMO. Only downside is the money.
