So I had a rhinoplasty surgery one month ago..it was a four hour surgery. On the day of surgery, I was told by my nurses to take everything off including my underwear..when i asked why" one of them said I might need a foley catheter ..I told her very firmly that I dont want it..otherwise i dont want to get this surgeryy..Then she went and asked another nurse , came back and said okay if you dont want a foley we won't pass it and you can keep ur underwear on if it's cotton (which it was by the way 90% cotton,10 % elastine)..I again went to the both my nurses n told them very firmly that either to give me diapers and I dont want a foley at any cost , even in emergency. If you'll pass foley after my sleeping, i 'll report it. Both of them said "no need""you wont need it.."In the meanwhile I was given IV n drugs and I dozed off to sleep..In the recovery,, I said to one of the same nurse who was with me in OR that I want to go to bathroomm.she said I'll bring the bedpan..I said no to it..I said i'll go to bathroom later but I font want to use a bedpan..she went to the counter in recovery room and laughed with other nurses that we passed her foley(in,out) 3 times in the surgery and now she's refusing to use bedpan (which I overheard) I feel cheated, violated..I had a burning pain while urinating..I went to my OR nurses to confirm if they passed foley or not in surgery..To which one of them lied very confidently that u were not given enough fluids so we didn't passed foleyy..I asked my doctor after 7 days when I was getting my stitcches removed, n he confirmed that yes we passed (in, out straight foley 3 times during ur surgery n nurses didn't tell us about your wishes..N he apologized... Isnt it unethical. I'm shocked at their behaviour..i think i should report it to the hospital..Atleast doctor was truthful , unlike nurses..

Oh my. This is not the place for this. And FYI, getting straight cathed is not the same as a foley. What exactly did you expect them to do when your bladder filled up?
Take it up with the hospital. But I would suggest that you don't have any type of surgery due to your fear of catheters.
Hospitals don't put people in briefs. They are not called diapers. Briefs cause skin breakdown and infection.

You didn't want a Foley and got a straight cath. Sounds like the respected your wishes. Be glad you didn't fall while ambulating post surgery and split your forehead

I call BS on this whole story.
Why would ANYONE not on an absolutely insane amount of IV fluids and/or diuretics need to be straight-cathed three times in four hours???
And why would rhinoplasty take four hours in the first place?
Nope, I gotta call this one a troll post. Sorry.

Don't they just tie your hands down and give you a little beating in the face? I've never heard of catheters and bedpans associated with rhinoplasty. A lot of people aren't even fully sedated ...it's usually twilight.

you are not going to void while under anesthesia. If your bladder had no been drained, there is a greater risk of retention if bladder is expanded much beyond 500mL (per medicine attending physician who just renewed her board certification). We go through this all the time with our ortho patients. sometimes they will have a Foley and it is removed at the end of the case or removed when they hit the floor.
I love when they get a single shot of anesthesia for hip surgery and no Foley. most are certain to retain.
I am not sure I understand the aversion to Foleys. They were a blessing for the 2 c-sects I had!

After 4 hours of surgery under GA without a foley and enough IV fluid, patients can very well be incontinent of urine by the end of the case. Urinary retention after spinal anesthesia is very common, especially in orthopedic surgery. Different deal all together.
