Underage drinking question? please help

Published

OK, so first off, I am going into my second semester of my adn program and I am 19 years old. I was at a party last night with my friend and there were about 70-80 people there.

A girl made me a drink and I decided to drink it. It was kind of strong but I drank it anyway.

There was a lot of marijuana so we decided to leave but our truck was boxed in by other vehicles. I told my friend to drive my truck and he agreed, but out of habit I got in the drivers seat. So we are waiting for some of the cars to leave so we can get out and then the cops show up.

One cop came up and said they were going to breathalyze everyone driving and just to sit tight. Then another cop came and asked me what I had to drink and I told him a cup of grape juice with a small amount of vodka a few hours ago.

He then told me he was going to breathalyze me and asked what my name was, how old I was, and who my parents were. I didn't see him write anything down, but it was dark so I don't really know what he did.

I blew a 0.02 and he told me I could go. He didn't breathalyze my friend. I AM INCREDIBLY PARANOID THAT I AM GOING TO GET AN UNDERAGE DRINKING TICKET IN THE MAIL.

I live in Mississippi and this is my first run in with law enforcement beside getting a ticket for running a stop sign. I personally think the officers were more concerned with what was going on inside than with me. I mentioned something about the marijuana to one cop and he just walked inside.

My question to anyone who has any knowledge about legal issues is, can I get a ticket in the mail?

Keep in mind that I was in my truck with tag number visible ... and if I do how will this affect my status in school and taking my boards? I live in Mississippi. Any input is appreciated, but I really don't need a lecture about this incident. I am a good kid, I never go anywhere or do anything besides study.

Thank you all.

"Parent" advice to NOT drink and drive? I'm in my early 30's, so not sure about your older comment either. Why don't you just light the joint and give it to them also.

I would like to think that if any of my kids ever decided to post on a public forum, that there would be mature and responsible people to give them "parent" advice.

By the way, please rephrase your comment about being 19 and we "all have" drank before. I'm not perfect, but I have never drank a drop of alcohol in my life. I hope my kids follow my example.

If you've never had alcohol, woo-hoo. I'm not going to rephrase my comment because yes, most people have drank. Congrats on being the minority lol.

At the end of the day, she's 19. She's gonna have a drink here or there. As long as she's careful she's okay. Which means, don't drive! That's the difference between parent advice and realistic advice.

Sure, tell the next cop who catches an underage drinker that.

I'm not a parent. I'm still relatively young, but I am legally able to drink. I choose not to sometimes, if I don't think I can control myself.

OP, you can have a drink if you want. You can also smoke marijuana, be promiscuous, and steal. Just know that you should be ready to face the consequences of your choices.

This has nothing to do with cops.

She can have a drink here or there if she chooses as long as she's careful.

There's consequences for literally everything you do. No need to blow them all out of proportion though.

You don't have to be a parent to give advice that isn't realistic. It's better to tell some one how to be safe when they're doing something than to just say "don't do it" because, yeah right lol.

Never, ever take a drink from someone who "made it for you". You run the risk of a date-rape drug or something else being put in your drink.

My advice for my kids was not to drink when they were underage. Same goes for you.

A world of headache meaning legal problems and possible denial of being issued a nursing license. Laws are laws; fight to change them if you wish, but follow them.

I'm certainly not old enough to have children beyond junior high. It's not "parent" advice; it's protect your future advice.

If you are one of those currently engaging in illegal activities such as underage drinking, consider all of the consequences of those actions. It's not all fun and games, as much as some wish it were.

Yes it's the "law" but honestly at that age you're gonna do what you want. So just be careful.

I know zero teenagers / young adults who are going to just change their minds because something is "bad".

Driving after drinking could hurt someone else. So yes, I find that to be serious. Drinking at a party? No.. not to me.

No need to make this girl feel like a bad person for doing something completely normal. She'll learn from her mistakes, like everyone else, and adjust accordingly.

You are absolutely right! It's just like every smoking patient I get. Instead of telling them to quit, I should just be realistic and tell them to smoke here and there and to be veerrryyyy careful. As long as they are careful with the amount they are smoking then they aren't hurting anyone. Right?

By the way, is there REALLY a way to be careful when drinking? Doesn't it impair your judgement? I mean, your judgement seemed a little impaired when you typed those last few comments. Let me wait till you sober up before I continue.

I'm breastfeeding so I can't drink right now, sorry girl.

Babies are my weakness. Ok, nice save! If that is your precious princess on your profile pic, wouldn't you want people telling her it is a bad idea to drink? I have three kids of my own and need more people against the things that will harm them. See where I am coming from? And people never know the effect of alcohol on their body until the damage has been done. Everyone tolerates it differently.

I found this statement by googling "underage drinking and DUI:" Congress then passed the federal Zero Tolerance Bill, which required the states—again, under the threat of losing federal highway funds – to make it illegal for a minor to drive with a BAC of .02% or higher. Every state has complied.

As I said earlier, there are some states that have true zero tolerance and if you register anything above 0.00 you will get a DUI. It is not going to matter to the BON much whether you got a underage DUI or an "adult" DUI -- both are going to cost you a ton and cause problems for a nursing license.

Don't drink and drive, that includes sitting behind the wheel. You do not even have to have the car started to get charged. The OP is very lucky because she said she blew a 0.02; the legal limit for a underage DUI. She is very lucky she did not spend the night in jail, lose her license, and end up with a pile of lawyer and legal fees. Yes, I am "old" according to some here. I also have spent many a day dealing with my soldiers who made the same mistake. Time in court, lost security clearances, lost jobs, lost families. Learn the hard way -- that's fine. But don't complain when you are seeking advice on the "nursing with a criminal record" thread because you can't can't find a job because you have stipulations on your license.

Sage advice. One can only hope that when your own little bundle of joy gets older she can get advice from strangers on the internet about how to be "careful" and "safe" while breaking the law.

The OP changed their user name as someone mentioned earlier. Why do people do that? I really hate thinking there are actually people out there that create stories on public forums just for amusement. I wish I had that much time on my hands. Thank God passing gas doesn't require hands or time. Otherwise, I would be in real trouble.
