Hello everyone! I may be a little early with this, but here's a new post for all of you hoping to apply this September 2nd for the Spring 2015 semester at UMSON. You can post questions you have, helpful advice you would like to give (if you're already in the program), etc.

I specifically have a question for those who have already applied to the Spring 2014 semester and got in. When you applied last September, when in November did you get your acceptance letter in the mail? Was it the beginning, middle, or toward the end of November? I'm asking this because the other nursing school I am applying to only gives a 3-week time period after the end of October (when they let you know if you made it in or not) to accept or decline enrollment. So, if I don't make it into UMSON, I'd want to be able to give this other nursing school an answer before the 3-week time period runs out.

KayBee09... I feel the same. I'm more comfortable talking to my patients than people around our age in my community college classes! (Average is probably between ages 40-90 at the lab!) I love talking about school, buying a house, health, saving money, other things like that. We're planners, yes? Haha!

I must say the MTA is not completely reliable. On test days I would probably drive if you can. I normally took off work when I was in nursing school on days that I couldn't miss class or be late. A few times throughout the year there is always something wrong with the tracks.

huh, planners.. I like the sound of that! Are you applying to shady grove or baltimore? It'd be cool to meat an "old soul" who's the same age as me haha

KayBee09- Public transportation in Baltimore stinks! I used to live on the west side of the city (about 5 miles away from UMSON,) and commuted to Arundel Mills mall (to work) which is very close to Ft. Meade. I had to take one bus downtown, get off near the convention center/Camden Yards, get on the light rail to the airport, then take a bus from the airport to the mall. By car, that's about 15 minutes. Via public transportation, it took me 3 hours. Yes, that's 3 hours ONE WAY! I couldn't read because I often couldn't find a seat on one of the buses or it was just too crowded (so don't expect to get any studying done.) For several months, repairs were being done on the light rail, so I'd have to take a bus for the middle leg, instead of the light rail. To transfer, I'd have to take it all the way to the North Avenue light rail stop. (It's a good idea to start looking at maps.) Totally out of the way and not the nicest of areas. Sure, light rail is great when you're going to an O's game or if you already live in the city, but when you HAVE to rely on public transportation, it's terribly inconvenient. It's not a reliable mode of transportation if you are that far away and want to be on time for anything. I know other people have decent experiences with MTA in Baltimore, but I definitely did NOT! It was so much easier to drive, and I was so grateful when I had a car again.

I applied to the Shady Grove campus. As much as I dislike 270, I think I can manage that commute just fine. And my mom lives 10 mins away, so if I need a home away from home, I can go to her house.

During my failed attempt at being a UMSON student last January, I got to attend 1 1/2 days of orientation at the Shady Grove campus. I'm 37. There was one woman who was definitely older than I was. The orientation group looked like a meeting of the United Nations. There were a few guys, one of whom seemed to be an Orthodox Jew. There were young women, who looked like they were in their early 20's. Most seemed to be in their mid-20's. It was all over the place. It was a very diverse group, from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. If you get in, definitely know who your buddies are on here, as it seemed that many people already knew each other. I hadn't yet joined allnurses, so I felt like the odd one out.

KayBee09, like afowler77 I applied to Shady Grove too. :) Same situation regarding 270 and nearby family as well. I'm trying to see if living with my older sister for the two years could be an option, but at the moment it's looking to be a rocky road because she's looking to move closer to our campus. (Her job is a very short walk away from the Universities!) Also, like everyone else I'm not guaranteed into the program yet, so nothing is absolutely set in stone. Oh well!

Haha afowler77 if it comes down to it, we should carpool! (And a 3-hour commute going only one way? How did you do it?! You've got some willpower, girl!)

I'm also in my early 20s!! And planning to get married soon and buying a house and all that haha :) I sometimes can't even relate to my own group of friends because I like to plan. Lol! it'd be so nice to actually meet everyone here!!

Ohh afowler77, you'll be in such good company this time around! :D I feel like we will all be a pretty tight team if we all end up going the Universities together. We've got to get through these two years together! Gosh I'm so excited to meet you all! Even those of you who are going to Baltimore! If we all get in, I hope I can meet you all as well somehow! (Maybe a big allnurses UMSON Spring 2015 day trip to the inner harbor in Baltimore?)

gummycoco- Well, then, we'll just have to be friends! (even though I'm 37 now) I got married (now divorced,) had 3 kids, and bought a house, and had two years of school under my belt, all by the time I was 24. I found out I was pregnant with #2 the day before I turned 21. (I went out for milkshakes at Friendly's.) I had a hard time finding friends back then because they were still doing young people things and I was going full steam ahead to adulthood. I'm still younger than the parents of my kids' friends. Anyway, I'm just glad to be finally finishing school. I relate well to younger people, because my career path was put on hold to raise a family, so I'm kind-of just starting out- economically, anyway. The divorce was a big setback as well, so in many ways, I'm on the same level, at least financially, as much younger folks. I, too, am a planner. I HAVE to plan ahead! Me+my calendar=true love, we go everywhere together.

I can't remember which one of you is the future military wife (sorry!) But no worries, Ft. Meade is full of young couples. I met my best friend when she was a young wife who had just moved to Maryland. I really needed a best friend, so I figured the military wife who had just moved here could probably use a friend. I was right, and we are still best friends 11 years later. Have faith!

Bottom line is- while we are in nursing school, none of us will have time to remember that we even have friends! Hopefully, we can connect, even if we end up at different schools.

littlemango- carpooling could work! If we end up at Towson, you could always use my house as a stopping point, on the way home, to eat or take a break. Or a place to go if the weather is bad.

Congrats to all those who have gotten in to a nursing program so far. I am what you'd call a "youngster". I am looking forward to continuing my college career in a nursing school! Although I am a year or two behind where I should be, being a nurse will happen one way or another!

Yikes at the three hour commute. I couldn't do it!!! I am actually not familiar at all with the bus lines so that is why it is extremely hard for me when the trains aren't working. I normally call a friend or family member to come pick me up if the trains really aren't working. I use the subway solely for the purpose of saving money on parking as parking downtown is expensive. I live in Howard County so I'm about 15-20 mins without traffic to the subway station, and it is about a 30 min ride from my stop to Hopkins. It would be shorter though if you are getting off at lexington market like I would say maybe 15 additional minutes.

Just found out that my fiance got orders to Korea for 12 months.. definitely put a wrench in our plans to get married and for me to finish school there.. Hopefully the decisions come out sooner rather than later now I really have a lot to figure out for the spring.. ughh nothing ever goes according to plan
