Hello everyone! I may be a little early with this, but here's a new post for all of you hoping to apply this September 2nd for the Spring 2015 semester at UMSON. You can post questions you have, helpful advice you would like to give (if you're already in the program), etc.

I specifically have a question for those who have already applied to the Spring 2014 semester and got in. When you applied last September, when in November did you get your acceptance letter in the mail? Was it the beginning, middle, or toward the end of November? I'm asking this because the other nursing school I am applying to only gives a 3-week time period after the end of October (when they let you know if you made it in or not) to accept or decline enrollment. So, if I don't make it into UMSON, I'd want to be able to give this other nursing school an answer before the 3-week time period runs out.

It must be getting close to the decision date, the anticipation is killing me! I am ready to move to Maryland start nursing school and finally have the life I always wanted. hopefully we find out soon so I can start making arrangements for spring! Is anyone from the fort meade area? how long of a commute is it from there?

@KayBee09 I grew up just a couple miles away from Ft. Meade. Ft. Meade to UMSON's adress is 17.2 miles and without any traffic (which I am most sure you will get some!!!) would take about 24 minutes (this is NOT accounting for downtown traffic/lights). You have a couple ways to go, which is a nice option in the event there is congestion on one route.

I would most definitely give yourself at least an hour (a lot more time if you have AM classes), as you will have some walking downtown once you park.

Here's an early welcome to the state of Maryland!!

thanks for your response! Are there any local transportation options in the area that may make it an easier commute? I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best! I have been to Maryland many times to visit my fiance on base and I am ready to settle down there for the next couple years while I finish school, that is why I cant wait to hear a decision, I have alot to do between now and spring if i get accepted!

Are most people (mostly shady grove) going to be older with families? I only ask cause im 19 and no where near that stage in life...So I worry about making friends and stuff if I'm the young one lol

I'm sure everyone will be nice...but I doubt women with families and stuff will wanna hang out with a teenager lol

There is the MARC train system. I am not sure how far it goes into Baltimore. You may need to transfer onto the Light Rail once in Baltimore. A little research could come up with some answers. The nearest MARC stations to Fort Meade are the BWI Rail Station (10 miles away from Ft. Meade) or the Odenton Station (4.5 miles away from Ft. Meade). There are connecting bus services as well, from the MARC stations.

Honestly, my husband works for the State of Maryland in a department related to transportation and his ex-girlfriend did not drive and relied solely on public transportation here in Baltimore. He thinks you would be better off driving.

It's up to you!

Hey @KayBee09

I'm a military brat so I frequent Fort Meade. I live in Laurel which is just outside of fort meade and it takes me 30 mins to get to baltimore and 30 to get to shady grove. However...as stated 95 can really suck in the morning.

In terms of transportation I'm pretty sure you can take the MARC train to baltimore. I'm not sure how far the stop is from the actual school..but that may help with traffic and saving on parking!

Everyone at fort meade is really nice. I would also check the VARIOUS facebook pages. They have one called "Fort Meade Area information" where you can ask about transportation and possibly find carpooling.

Welcome to MD...get some crabs lol(:

Haha yes, KayBee09 get some crabs like kirstens suggested! It's a must! (So much Old Bay around here. You can even have it with fries!)

And don't worry kirstens, I'm a youngin' too. We won't be alone haha.

But hey, just because we're young doesn't mean getting along with the older students will be hard! Many posters here are older than us but we've been doin' just fine fitting in, right? In fact, I find it a great opportunity to learn from them, as their wisdom is absolutely invaluable. Just absorb it all like a sponge. :D It's better to learn now than be regretful later.

@littlemango

I knew there were a coule youngins on here. I didn't think you were one!!! I have been worrying about being an older student/being out pf place but I did hear that UMSON tends to have older students when compared to other local nursing schools.

When I went to pyshicaly hand in my application/materials, it didn't look that way, though. Mostly looked about early 20's.

Haha vigor145, I'm flattered! I try to be as professional as I can here, but I'm still a kid through the eyes of some.

Regarding the application and the 20-somethings, I'm sure the fashion these days helps people look younger. That's what I've noticed in college, I can never tell ages because fashion is so universal now! The same thing seen on a 20-something looks just as good or even better on a 40, 50, 60, 70, or 90-something! I even get fashion advice from my 80-something patient at work! (She's amazing, so colorful. I'm jealous! Haha!)

Though, being younger, I feel my application may be compromised. How to explain... Basically, I've always thought that through the eyes of Admissions, maybe it wouldn't be a good choice to pick me as a student because of lack of professional experience. I've had this concern for a long while now... so I tried getting a professional job in health care as soon as I graduated high school.

Thank you all for the advice! I am also a youngster but mature for my age. I have trouble making friends with people my own age so knowing that the population of students tends to be older is comforting to me! I mean not 21 year old's can relate to me when I talk about getting married and moving states away to live with my future husband on a military base.. haha

Specializes in NICU.

You can take the Subway into Baltimore city and it goes all the way to Hopkins. I have taken it to go to the UMMC, which is close to UMSON. It is like maybe 2 blocks. I think I got off at the Lexington Market exit. lol..Kirsten I'm sure you will not be alone. I'm in my late 20s. As far as getting into nursing school, i don't feel as professional experience matters so much as the complete package. It def does make a difference when finding a job in the field though.
