Hello everyone! I may be a little early with this, but here's a new post for all of you hoping to apply this September 2nd for the Spring 2015 semester at UMSON. You can post questions you have, helpful advice you would like to give (if you're already in the program), etc.
I specifically have a question for those who have already applied to the Spring 2014 semester and got in. When you applied last September, when in November did you get your acceptance letter in the mail? Was it the beginning, middle, or toward the end of November? I'm asking this because the other nursing school I am applying to only gives a 3-week time period after the end of October (when they let you know if you made it in or not) to accept or decline enrollment. So, if I don't make it into UMSON, I'd want to be able to give this other nursing school an answer before the 3-week time period runs out.
I have worked (roughly) every other Saturday night (7p-7a) throughout the program and I am finishing the 16 month CNL program. My job can have some down time for studying, though to be honest, it's nice to NOT study for a night also. The hardest part was switching from nights to days for early morning Monday classes as I am a night person to begin with.
Would I recommend it? Probably not. It really depends on the person. Is it possible? Yes, though not full time in my opinion.
I'm working a 9-5 now, so there's just no way I can continue here once school starts. I'm socking $$ away for tuition now. I won't work during my first semester, but I'm hoping I can get a PRN CNA/PCT job after my first semester and work a lot of hours over breaks and one shift a week during the school year.
There was a thread on here which I stumbled upon after one of the UMSON Shady Grove Open Houses, and said it apparently looks better if you've had healthcare experience (even just secretarial work or janitorial, as long as you're working inside of a healthcare facility). However, I've seen from previous cycles that they admit people without healthcare experience, so afowler77 I think you'll be fine as long as your grades and references as good!

afowler77 I'm with you on the working aspect. Like you and hegster, I'll also be needing some money for gas, since I plan on commuting to either nursing school for now. I've talked to my boss about my availability for the coming Spring, and we've agreed for me to work PRN on Saturdays (hours range from 8am-12pm where I work, and the other offsite 7am-1pm). This won't be any problem, though, since I already work Saturday mornings.
