Who is applying?
I'm really liking what I'm reading on the UMSON website.
It looks like they've overhauled/tweaked the curriculum to be focused on preparing us for where healthcare is going (instead of what it has been). The new study-plan seems to be laying a great foundation for further education in upper-level nursing practice. It also seems like it will give the Fall 2014 class more in-depth understanding of nursing theory before delving into nursing practice. Perhaps this transition is to facilitate those of us who hope to pursue a Doctorate in Nursing since sooner or later that will be the bare minimum accreditation for Nurse Practitioners?
First semester classes used to be:
-Intro to Professional Nursing Practice
-Pathopharmacology
-Science and Research for Nursing Practice
-Health Assessment
If we get in, we'll be the first class to work the new curriculum where first semester consists of:
-Professional Role of the Registered Nurse
-Prevention, Wellness, and Health Promotion
-Fundamentals of Nursing Care in the Context of Older Adults
-Research and Evidence-Based Practice
-Health Assessment
Other big changes I've noticed in the new curriculum is many courses have been renamed to be more... modern maybe? For example community health nursing (a 4th semester course) looks like it's been renamed Public Health: Population-Focused Nursing.
I'm curious to know whether this is a full curriculum overhaul or just a few tweaks and re-names.
What do you guys think about that? None of the other programs I've applied to (that I've noticed anyways) have made many changes to their curriculums.
Queserasera gives a good overview of the CNL, but I'd encourage you to read about the program on the umson website as well as through the aacn website. I'm really excited about it, but I'm also considering a second bachelors from towson or salisbury if I don't get into umson. I felt good about my interview though, so hopefully I'll hear some good news in a couple weeks.
From what I recall from orientation for UMSON (I was accepted, but my math credits fell through and had to reapply) the overall content of the classes is the same, it's just that they took certain elements of each class, as it was previously named/structured, and shifted them into other classes. I believe it was just a re-grouping of the material presented. I'll check my orientation notes and let you know what they told us. But basically, don't sweat the class changes! It's the same education as UMSON students who started this semester! Same total material, just divided up differently among classes.
I am getting very nervous. I didn't get into Salisbury's program unfortunately. I rushed the application and the essay. I took my time with UMSON, so I am hoping I get in. I also submitted three references just incase one didn't make it on time, but they all are in the system. Good luck to everyone!

Interviews are only for qualified CNL applicants - BSN program committee does not conduct interviews (Though I totally wish they did!!)
