UMSON Fall 2014

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Deadline is set - February 3, 2014

Who is applying?

Yeah I definitely took my time with the UMSON application than Salisbury, but I think it was because it was due so early! I wish I submitted a third LOR like I did for Maryland. I ended up being waitlisted, but I'm treating it more so as a rejection unless a spot opens up. Salisbury's class is usually small, so you never know. UMSON is my first pick, so that the only one I really care about getting into. *fingers crossed and praying*

Grey Lady,

I applied for the fall semester, my overall gpa was a few points away from 3.00 for the overall but for the prereqs its a little bit above 3.0. So my questions is do you think retaking a course looks bad for the admissions? I plan on retaking one more course because if I do not take it it will be very difficult to raise it with difficult science courses in the future when I do my post bacc. Anyways sorry to ramble but then I took my teas test and got an overall 87% it placed me on the 97th percentile, and my essays were good. I talked about how becoming a nurse would bring out the educator in me and allow me to educate my patients on how to live a healthy life. I just do not know if I have any chance I know most people have like higher than 3.4 but one thing about me is i always take hard courses like cell biology and get B's. what are my chances to get in?

Honestly ii's anybody's guess and at this point there's nothing you can do but wait and see. For me personally, if I don't get in, I do plan on retaking courses that I did not get an A in (EXCEPT Organic Chemistry! I'm NEVER doing that again!). Also after you get your letter, you could talk to admission and ask them for ways you could improve your application the next time around. But I never try to get caught up in the "what are my chances" theories. Not everyone who applies with a 4.0 gets in and not everyone with a 3.0 gets rejected! You never know where the pendulum will swing because everyone's application is different...so sit tight and we'll see.

PinkEagle is correct. There are way too many variables to be able to evaluate anyone's application, not the least of which is that your application is compared to all the others. Every semester is a brand new applicant pool and a brand new ball game. Best of luck to you all.

Not that I'm an expert, but to address your question about retaking a course - I'm assuming decisions would be made before you got a new grade, so for this application it might not make a difference.

But, from personal experience, repeating courses that I didn't do well in has always been a good choice. Now I'm not saying "slack the first time and take it over and over again". I'm saying if you weren't able to demonstrate your full potential the first time, take it again, get the better grade, and demonstrate that you are driven to succeed, and that you have dedicated yourself to this pursuit.

Thank you everyone for commenting with your advice and opinion. I def plan on retaking, this will be the last class i retake i have retaken 2 other classes before bad!!! but i just never knew i needed to study more than others for the same grade. I am sure i have some sort of mild learning disability.

Grey lady,

sorry I forgot to ask this question on my first post. But last week UMD sent me a email saying that I needed to take an en109 if i am accepted because they do not accept a certain english course. I was wondering if they email this to all applicants who need english 109? I did not think i would need to take english 109 because I took a literature class which is basically no where near in comparison with a lower level english class. Thats why i didnt think english 109 would be required.

I have no idea what en 109 correlates to, but typically you needed to have taken eng composition and eng lit. The course code is different depending on where you take it. If you're missing either of them but think you know the material, I'd recommend CLEPing out of the class. That's what I'm doing for HG&D. I took early childhood, intro psych, ed psych, and intro soc, so I'm pretty sure I don't need a whole class in HG&D. After I take the CLEP, I'll have the credits and the course will be marked off. It's faster and cheaper than taking the actual class. I CLEPed out of eng lit when I was 16, and I remember it being a cake walk. Check it out.

I don't evaluate transcripts but I know the answer to this question. If you are talking about course numbers at Montgomery College, EN 109 is required. Another English class cannot be substituted for it. I believe this is because what we are after is the technical writing component, not literature, that you need to have. You will not believe how many research papers you will have to write. If you got an email telling you that you need this class from our admissions department, you should take it seriously. It is the policy to contact any students who are missing classes early in the application processing to give them ample time to find and register for those classes this summer or fall. You acceptance offer will be provisional upon completion of these courses with a grade of B or better before nursing classes begin in January. Your offer will be rescinded if you do not.

My Application status just changed to "Decision Made" and I'm a "Provisional-Admit" for the Baltimore campus. I think that means that I just need to submit a final transcript for the classes that were in progress at the time when the application was due. I haven't been called yet, but I'm cautiously optomistic!
