UMSON Fall 2014

Deadline is set - February 3, 2014

Who is applying?

Congrats to whoever just got accepted! and thank you for serving our country !!!

YESS! i totally agree with that!

Congratulations aviator8605!

I hope that it's not until the end of April this we find out! The wait is killing me!!

The CLEP test is a great way to get credit without re-taking a class. I had taken English classes at Montgomery College in the mid-90's, but didn't finish one because my son was born at the end of the semester. Unfortunately, to transfer to Frederick Community College, a student needs to take EN101 and EN102 at MC, and BOTH classes transfer in as ONLY EN101! (My brother faced this same problem at UMCP.) So I took the EN101 CLEP test and took EN102 class online.

I offer these words of caution with the CLEP: STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! And be sure to allow sufficient time for studying. Begin a few months in advance. The tests cover an entire semester's worth of material. They are basically like a comprehensive final exam for a class. It is worth it to spend $10 to download a PDF of the CLEP study guide for the test material. I thought I had studied hard enough for the College Algebra CLEP, but I missed the 50-point cutoff (to pass) by TWO POINTS! If I had just begun studying earlier in the fall, I would be in nursing school right now, instead of re-taking algebra!

Thanks katie_123! I'm looking forward to the acceptance letters to start rolling out so we will know who our classmates are.

While You're Waiting...

I know we are all waiting impatiently for news. Instead of obsessively checking your status or calling Admissions or worrying, here are a few things you can do to fill your time productively. Even if you end up waitlisted, it is better to take care of these things BEFORE you get "The Call." Otherwise, you'll be scrambling at the last minute, and that is unnecessary stress, since you can avoid it.

1. Start applying for scholarships. I haven't amped up my scholarship applying just yet, since I have two classes to focus on. But every little bit of extra money helps.

2. Make sure your CPR certification is up-to-date. You're going to need it by August!

3. Begin with your immunizations. The Hepatitis B vaccination consists of three shots; the first two are one month apart and the third is five months after you receive the second. We need to have the first two prior to attending orientation. Obtain proof of your MMR and Varicella immunizations, titers, or illness. You will also need a current tetorifice vaccine. Mine is current (

4. The TB test can be done closer to orientation. But you do need to have two negative PPD's, at least one week apart.

5. MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING! Also, scan it into the computer, because it is preferred that it be submitted via email. Since I had to reapply, I am so glad that I kept meticulous records (both paper and electronic) of my health and CPR forms. Hopefully, I will need them.

Remember that physicians' offices are busy over the summer, since kids are out of school. My advice is to not wait on getting these out of the way. I tried to hustle through for the spring semester and barely made it...all over the Christmas and New Year's holidays. I got my "lucky" break and am waiting on the fall now, so I have more time. Believe me, it's better to not rush! Even if we are not accepted, I'm sure most of us will re-apply or apply to other programs, so we will need all of these things anyway.

Aviator8605, are you applying to NECP? I'm military as well and just found out I got into UMSON! Congrats!

Yes, I'm applying to necp. My chief nurse interview is April 2nd. Getting accepted into a school is a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, but I feel like the anxiety is going to start all over again with the necp selection process.

Awesome! I had my CN interview last week. Good luck! I'm in the same boat... more waiting! yay! Do you mind me asking what base you're at?

Little Rock AFB. I know of one other guy here that was accepted to UMSON as well.

Hi everyone. I just checked mine, and it said "Committee ready". I'm currently a nervous wreck.

Oh and what other schools did you all apply to?
