Hi guys! I know it's a little early... but just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying to the UMD CNL program for fall of 2018. I just submitted my application!
doulos1, I know that as long as you have all your application materials in by the priority deadline (March 1st), you are guaranteed to have you application reviewed! I guess after that, it really just depends on numbers on and all that!
From the website, "For best consideration, applicants are encouraged to have all required application materials submitted by the priority deadline. The Admissions Committee will review completed applications on a rolling basis and release decisions accordingly. Competitive applicants will be offered admission first. Space is limited so applicants are encouraged to apply early."
Hi everyone! I applied to the CNL program Fall 2018 as well! I am set up for an interview on March 8th. I finished the writing assessment, however, I was not asked to set up a UMID account. What is this?
Also, I read on the site that if minimum requirements were met, you would be called for an interview. Yet, a previous poster said that they heard only 10% of applicants get called for an interview. Can anyone clarify?
Good luck to everyone!
Merp - the UMID account associated the the school to access various services from University of Maryland...I set up the account but really haven't done much else with it. I'm sure if you haven't received one yet, then you will soon. At the top, it specifies that it is not an admissions letter, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I saw that too, and I also have no idea how only 10% of applicants could be interviewed. I think the acceptance rate overall is higher than 10% -- I listened to an online information session and last semester, I believe they said ~150 applied and ~55-60 were accepted? I'm sure you could e-mail admissions and clarify numbers, but I don't think that 10% correct. But I'm really not sure. If anyone has any other information on this, please share!
Also, I think a lot of it is a matter of timing/applying early. Because UMD reviews applicants on a rolling basis, applying early will probably increase your chances. I'm not exactly sure how they select who to invite for an interview, but I'd imagine if you meet the criteria and apply relatively early, you've got a good chance!
Hello I was the one that said that 10% of applicants get an interview! I was sure that I heard the head of the CNL program Dr.Lessans say that statistic at UMSON's most recent open house, but I also could have misheard since since you're right it doesn't really make sense if those are the numbers! I do definitely know that not everybody gets an interview though, seeing as my friend and his other friends (a total of 10 people) applied to the CNL program, all meeting the minimum requirements, and none of them got an interview.
Hey! I work at the Medical Center across the street as a Patient Care Technician. I work with CNLs and there are numerous opportunities. As with any nursing degree you will have to start as a regular nurse. From what I've heard from my coworker, you learn to take on leadership roles but ultimately you have to work as a nurse first. Hope that kind of helps.
Thank you for that information! I'm just not really sure how this degree compares to a BSN. I tried to look at CNL positions in the area and the description included that a BSN/MSN was needed. I don't mind working for 2-3 years as a regular nurse experience is definitely important. I'm just worried that without an actual degree in BSN/MSN I would have some difficulties later on.
yli08, I have been wondering that too. This degree is a MS with the Clinical Nurse Leader specialty, but other schools have Direct Entry MSN programs. At the end of the day, both allow you to take the NCLEX to become an RN, but the CNL program also, of course, gives you the opportunity to take the CNL exam. I am wondering which degree would look better for employers.
Also, good to know isgvfg! I've heard a lot of different things regarding the interview...so who knows what is true or not. Fingers crossed we will hear something soon though.
ltaylor19,
Right, we're definitely on the same page regarding this degree. I saw that UVA offered the MSN-CNL and here it's just a MS-CNL. While we do get the same opportunity to take the CNL exam, I just haven't seen that many opportunities at this time. Also, I've seen that RN's without experience in the field don't have the best of luck finding employment after graduation as many new grad programs are pretty competitive to get into. Many suggest working as a CNA while in school if not at least volunteer. Does anyone have any insight or opinions regarding this?

I had my interview today and I feel good about it, but there are a lot of applicants for the Fall semester so I'm just hoping it turns out well! Good luck to everybody else waiting to hear back and waiting to have your interview!!
