UK Nurses making the jump to USA?

World Registration

Published

Hey!!

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice.. I'm going to graduating university in november and i have my first job already at a&e (ER). Although my course is predominantly adult nursing, in order to graduate and qualify we do have to show that we have experience with paediatrics, obs and mental health... all of which I have through doing clinical placements in both gynae and a&e.. I was wondering if any one knows the set amount in order to be able to take the NCLEX.

Or the best process in order for me to get out there. I dated a guy for three years so i've spent the majority of my time over there and have so many friends now and I just see my life there rather than in England... if someone could give me some advice on best routes to take it'd be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Rachel

Hey, there. We moved your thread to our Immigration Advice forum where your question will be answered more accurately in the next day. Good luck to you.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.
Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Until you apply and your transcripts assessed it is hard to say if you will meet US state requirements however your transcripts have to show both clinical and theory in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adults and average requirements tend to be 75 plus hours both clinical and theory as a rough guide.

Only once you have passed NCLEX will the journey really beginning with a starting point of trying to find a employer willing to wait the couple of years or more it may take before a immigrant visa is available to you.

I suggest getting sorted with registration once you have graduated and then look at imigration

Hey thanks for your reply, I know this makes me sound super stupid but where do I apply?

You apply to the BON of the US state in which you wish to be licensed. Each individual state licenses and regulates the practice of nursing within its borders.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Also depends on the state. California for example will not accept application without a US SSN and you can't get that until in the US and working. Which state are you looking at? There are links to the various state boards of nursing at the bottom of the page

Okay thank you both. Im looking at Tn / Ga.

Hey, this is my theory hours and my course plan, I appear to have 120 credits in all fields of nursing. Does anyone know if thats usually enough? Thanks :)

Every state BON sets its own standards for licensure. None of us can tell you whether your transcript will meet the requirements for either TN or GA (esp. since what you posted is typical, vague, academic-speak :)). In order to be eligible for licensure in any US state, your school transcripts will need to include a sufficient quantity (as determined by each, individual state) of both didactic (lecture/classroom) and supervised clinical hours in adult med-surg, pediatrics, OB, and psychiatric nursing (enough hours in each of those specialty areas, not just enough total hours).

Rachel I am in the exact same boat - adult nursing and only did 2 weeks mental health and no paeds or obs - am desperate to move to Florida and am worried it won't be enough. Would a gynae ward count as obs though?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Gynecology might count if done during school and you had theory as listed on your educational transcripts.
