uk nurse

Does anyone if the current nurse training in UK is enough to work in USA?

I am concerned that it does not provide enough hours in all specialities! I am a registered adult nurse qualified since 2005.

Has anyone been able to get their licence for examination with their UK training alone, or did you have to take further courses? Did you do this in UK or USA?

Any help would be appreciated, I feel like I am hitting my head against a brick wall, and getting no information! :scrying:

the magic words are

if you did theory and practice hours in mental health/ maternity and childrens nursing then yes you may have enough hours

if you didnt then you dont qualify

there are some places offering courses to make up the hours but they must be certified by a university so they appear on your transcript

if you did some hours in these areas the only way to be sure is to apply for your ATT at the board of nursing, they look at your nursing transcript and decide if you have enough hours or not.

This subject has been covered lots on here, if you do a forum search you should be able to find out some more information

good luck

It seems to depend on what uni you're at as to what hours they provide. There are nurses on here who have had to make up hours & nurses who haven't.

EN is absolutely right - the only real way to tell is to apply & see what comes back! also do the search, as suggested, on here

Hi,

I did the project 2000 nursing course [adult branch] and qualified in 1995, I applied to CA BON [sept 2006] and have just got confirmation yesterday [!] that my training was complete and enough to go ahead and sit NCLEX.

Hope this helps.

well done!!!

i qualified in 2003 and had enough, i think it depends which university you attended, nurses in my trust who qualified in 2004 were still doing the required hours but after that they stopped it

I'm really hoping I have enough, I did practical in all the areas mentioned and i qualified in 1997 from a degree course based on the project 2000. I'm very grateful that i was born when I was because if i had gone to uni a year later the same course had already stopped doing the practical in maternity due to lack of placements, and a few years later they stopped the paediatrics too.

Thanks for all your replies-well done & Congratulations Janelola:Melody:

I have called, emailed from UK & USA hundreds of people, agencies, boards etc and it is like a minefield out there-all depends on indiviuial universities etc.

I did theory no practice in other branches-I am adult trained, with insight workbooks, and on some websites this is enough! I wonder if A&E covers peads & mental health?!? :chuckle

Some uni's will let you 'catch up' on practice hours but this has to be added to your transcripts:smilecoffeeIlovecof

I will keep you informed, pray for a miracle :saint:

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Some very good advice that I didn't follow but wish I had, was to apply to Vermont BON for permission to sit the NCLEX, you can always transfer it to wherever afterwards, I have started via California and it took 4 and a half months for then to get back to me [some say that was quick!!]

The agencies I approached specify that you need to be currently doing 'bedside nursing' and for at least a year. There are loads of thread relating to agencies on here, also loads of info about doing it yourself without an agency.

Good Luck!!

Hi staff nurse penny,

I am currently in university and I know my course does not give me the required hours as the paed hospitals won't let us in they said they have enough of 'their own' to contend with. I called adevia health who advised me that whilst I'm still in uni that I could ask for placements which mainly deal with these patients. I have done my maternity theory and practice, I ma just about to do my community placement and uni have neen good enough to place me with a health visitor so my peads will be covered and then the next medical placement I have I will have to cross my fingers and hope there is someone that fits the psych criteria.

adevia said to devise a table and whilst on placement ask the mentor to sign when you have completed the hours needed, but then it has to ge back to uni for them to put it on headed paper and attach to my transcript.

I know you have qualified now so it might be worth calling this agency and seeing if you have enough already.

Have to got your transcript with a breakdown of hours on?????

Lucky you indeed.

I applied for my ATT at the end of June 2006 and its still pending.

They finally acknowledged me in December asking for further confirmation of my psych hours.

And so it continues.

They are advising that it is taking 5 months min. so avoid this BON at all costs. Vermont is currently taking 3-4 months.

Gosh! do you mean California BON? I wonder if it is taking longer in your case as, by the sounds of it they are not sure about all your practice and theory hours, they also say it takes longer if you are the first person from your nursing institute/Uni to apply to that particular BON. Lets hope it's the latter reason.

All the best to you, I hope you get some good news soon. I've not booked date as yet for exam - got to start the actual studying now all the excitement is over after actually getting ATT!

Good Luck

each BON has their own requirements, unfortunately most university trainings do not meet US requirements and any top up courses have to be done with a recognised school of nursing/university course and must cover both theory and practical. The only way is apply to the BON or CGFNS CES and see what happens. You could also get a copy of your transcripts and get a rough idea on what your hours are
