Any UK nurses in process of applying for US nursing?

Hi Karen, regarding the NCLEX, I studied myself, I did get a few good books to help and a disc off ebay for kaplan test questions - I thought they were most like the real exam. How many questions did you have to answer? Did they give you any feedback on areas for improvement? I read an earlier post you wrote about your initial plans - so are you planning to go now to stick around for a while, I think I read somewhere that inital contracts would be for a few years - makes sense really - they've got to recoup their money somehow. As for me, I'm not sure yet whether to go with an agency or not, I'm in the middle of ploughing through paperwork to send for the visascreen - they want to know in ins and outs of a cat's wotsit!! :rotfl:They even want my GCSE results from 1988! No, I don't already have a job offer, I need to get my skates on - I moved jobs to ICU at the beginning of Dec 07 in order to be a bit more empoyable in the US ( I was a Diabetes Research Nurse - bit of a change!!). so I think I need more experience there before anyone will interview or consider me. How long have you been in ICU? Where are you planning on going? Jane :typing

Any UK nurses in process of applying for US nursing?

Hi! I'm a little behind you. I passed NCLEX in May 2007 but have not applied yet for visa screen, I hope to do that soon as I know it can take a while to come through. I didn't do the CGFNS as I'm trying to go to CA which doesn't require it. We decided 2 years ago that this is what we want to do, so now the long process hopefully can begin. How are you planning to go? Via an agency? Or via direct hire? Have you an area in mind that you want to go to? Good luck for the exam in June! Be happy to keep you updated or help in any way if I possibly can. Jane

    cardiac drug

Well, kind of true (waiting for patients to report adverse effects). But, before a drug even hits the market it will have to have undergone several clinical trials (from phase I to phase III) taking up to approx. 10 years!! Although, side effects can be downplayed and as long as they are mentioned on the leaflet as possible it kind of covers them. And as for drugs that you can't buy over the counter in the US, there are loads that you can buy that you can't here - I'm always amazed in Walgreens!! Janelola

    cardiac drug

Hi, No I don't think it is used, I've not heard of it in our ICU or CCU and it's certainly not in our bnf. From what I can gather drugs can come out in the states for a few years before we get them ( I used to work in clinical drug trials) Janelola

    Outpatient Nursing

Hi, I worked in opd general for 3 years. I agree with scattycarrots' comments about eye related tasks to be learnt and done. Generally though I did find that working in opd was more about keeping the clinic moving on time, for instance one nurse would do the 'weeing and weighing' another nurse would do the eye tests and make sure all the xrays/mri's/blood results etc were in the notes, then taking notes into doctor for them to see, assisting doctor with whatever procedure then getting them another appointment for follow up then in goes the next patient. It could be a little like a conveyer belt at times, the doctors have so little time allocated to each patient. That said, I really enjoyed my time on outpatients, I found you have a different/closer relationship with the consultants than on the wards, and it was about the whole team. Good luck in your new post!! Janelola

    Agenda for change (again)

Hi, I haven't encountered this particular problem, but have dealt with payroll before with a back pay issue. My advice would be to ask to speak to the manager and explain your unusual situation and ask if you could be considered a priority case as you are leaving the country. I know it's not very fair, but sometimes it's a case of 'he who shouts the loudest', if you are ringing them daily they'll want to get your case done to get you off their backs!!!! Just my thoughts... Janelola

    Just How Difficult is NCLEX?

Hi, Well, the reason nobody ever talks about the NCLEX is that you are supposedly forbidden to repeat anything you saw in the exam. (Did you ever see 'Fight Club'? ("The first rule about fight club is that you do not talk about fight club"!!). Anyway, Yes, I do think the exam was difficult, I do think you can learn it from books, there are loads of threads with info for good books. I did pass first time at 75 questions, but found the whole thing depressingly vague. I was hoping I would see questions where answers 1,2 and 3 would be obviously wrong for example, but it was just not like that. Many of the questions I could have agreed with say, 3 of the answers. So, in the end I just had to go with my gut feeling. There seemed to be plenty of prioritising questions. But then I think you just remember the questions you felt a bit shaky on. Good Luck by the way!! Janelola

    Chat Room Meeting

Hi, Well, now it's letting me onto the page but is asking for a user name and password so I'm putting the allnurses one in and it won't accept it? Do I need a separate username and password? Thanks Janelola
