I work in OB nights ( going to per diem in 2 weeks!!) When we are on low census, one of the two nurses will "float" to Med/Surg or ER. So last night I floated to Med/Surg. I don't mind helping out but they were busy and I answered lights and did 99.8% CNA work, which I DON'T mind at times but the aids and the nurses were sitting in their report room, chatting while I walked patients to the bathrooms, and changed incontinent patients and got ice for their floor from another floor!!!!!!!! Finally I spoke up and am now considered a bi#@% from OB!!! I don't care.
When MEd/Surg sends home their nurses or aids for low census, they are gone and NOT on call. As an OB nurse, I am on call during low census so do get called in to work Med/surg which I do not feel is right!!!
Please don't take this wrong. I want to help out, I am NOT beneath changing beds or giving bedpans but honestly, I felt like refusing to work like a 3rd string slave so that those nurses and aids could take a break every hour!!!! If I wasn't going to per diem very soon, I would probably have thrown a real fit!

Uhhhh......first you said you floated to M/S because they were busy, but then you said the nurses and aides were sitting around chatting.....which is it? And could it be possible that this was the first time all shift that they'd gotten a chance to sit down and maybe grab a bite to eat?
I work both M/S and OB, and we have the same "cultural" differences at my hospital (M/S nurses think they do all the work/OB nurses get upset if they have more than three patients, etc.). What's up with that?? Nurses in ALL disciplines work hard, and there are lazy ones in all disciplines (including med/surg) as well. Again, we've got to stop "eating" our own, and learn to respect one another if we are going to advance as a profession!

The OB vs Med/Surg vs ER vs ICU debate
We're all important..each with strengths and weaknesses.
If you feel you were being abused of course speak up..but there's always a right/wrong way to do it...I,personally would take the charge nurse aside and voice my concerns. On the other hand, if I complained to the group I'd probably be considered a b*tch...lol :)

Complain to the bigwig, i get called off all the time for low census, and then get worked to death when the census is hihg. No one at the top will listen to the little CNA when i complain that i cannot be 6 places at once, and i catch crap on another floor if i get called off by THEIR charge nurse.
And it's like this: I get called off, i am going OUT, i'm not going to always be at home and wait for some place to cal me at 3 am all because they made a mistake. I have somewhat of a life outside of work.

But you're not supposed to have a life outside of work, didn't you know that?

Cool, where can I get one of those?
Robert:eek:
In the discount bin at the Dollar Tree LOL.
It's either i have somewhat of a life outside of work, or i wind up in the padded room at work. Since i picked up some extra hours, i'm doing 95 hour weeks with both jobs and school tied together, i have to take the "ME" time whenever i can get it.

That's something that I just don't understand, either. I work prn in various depts, and of course each one thinks theirs is the busiest, they get dumped on more, etc. I can truly say, I have yet to find a 'cake job' in nursing. I find that every dept I work in is extremely busy and verrrrry stressful. I work in the outpt surgery dept, m/s, endo, behavioral, and on a good day get to have lunch, but as for breaks? forget that! I just wish that we all could realize that we all work hard (except for the lazy ones, as someone mentioned above).

I Love the Dollar Tree lol. You can wander around mindless and buy gadgets you don't need or don't have the time to use. ha ha
My concern with the nurses who were sitting around is: they were looking around for something else for me to do. Sure, they are entitled to a break but not for a break every hour when I didn't sit down all night. I guess I was just venting from a night of exhaustion.
Our department has filed a complaint with the administration that our department is called in on our "personal" time to cover all other departments and no other department has to do this but us. So, there are going to be some changes I'm certain.
Oh yeah, and when OB is swamped, I have never seen a Med/Surg nurse come to our assistance.

Interdepratmental tensions are always an issue when floating is not used equally. I prefer working in closed units or those who only float in their "family" (like L&D to PP or ICU to ER). If the help doesn't flow both ways, it can be incredibly frustrating. I had the same kind of experience at one hospital. L&D had to float anywhere when census was low (which is fine with me if I can do CNA work), but NO other unit would float to us when we were insanely busy.
