UFV January 2020 Intake

World Canada CA Programs

Published

I will be applying into the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program at UFV for January 2020 Intake.
Currently have A-English B-Bio B-Chem and a B-Math of which math I will be upgrading this summer to an A, hopefully.

I am also a RCA and have a lot of volunteer experience as well in the health care field

Would this be a strong enough application? Also, if anyone has experienced the information session or interview please do mention how it works and if there's any way to prepare or sort of get a better idea on what they're expecting.

You can apply to UFV at anytime during the year but the deadline for a September start is January 31st. If you want to start in January then you must have all your documents and such in by August 15th. You can apply August 16th for the September start or January 30th and still have the same chance of getting in. UFV gives seats to people with the highest points. Points are given for GPA, Volunteer or Work experience and based on the essay and interview if you get that far.

There is no "Waiting List" based on when the application is submitted.

I was on a waiting list before I got in last September. How it worked for me was I got all the documents in about the middle of January. I had 4 A's and had completed Eng 105 and Soc 101 at UFV with 2 more courses in-progress. I was invited to the Essay writing evening. And after that was again invited to the interviews. (I've been told that you need a minimum of 3 A's and 1 B to be invited to the essay writing evening.) After the interview when they sent out acceptance emails I recieved an email saying that though I was not accepted at this time, I had been placed on a waiting list should a spot become available. (Some people have said that only 10 people are put on this waitlist) A few months later I got another email saying there was a spot open for me should I chose to accept it. If this had not happened I would have try again next intake. Waitlisting does not continue past the intake you applied for.

I hope that wasn't too long and confusing and that it answered all your questions.

If you weren't clear on something or want me to explain in more detail don't hesistate to ask.

Adelinna

Hi Adelinna,

Thank you for clearing that up for me! This is actually the first time I've considered UFV's nursing program, so I haven't been able to familiarize myself with the application process, but I'm super thankful for you to help me answer my questions! I had one more question I was hoping you could help me answer in regards to the admission pre-reqs... On the website, it says that Math 11 is a pre-req, but I'm wondering if I can retake Math 12 instead and whether it would still be accepted? The reason I'd like to retake Math 12 is because some other nursing programs only accept Math 12 and not Math 11, and I would rather not take two courses if I don't need to. I tried getting in touch with some of the UFV advisors over 2 weeks ago, but have not heard back from them ? I emailed them at [email protected], but I'm not sure if that is the correct place to ask admission related questions? Once again, I am so thankful for all your help! ?

UFV's BSN program is not first come first serve. Applicants get points for their grades and volunteer experience. Those moving forward in the selection process are invited to an info session where they write an essay, and then the ones that are progressing from there are invited to an interview - both of those are also graded on a point system. Seats are offered to the applicants with the highest scores. UFV does put some people on a wait list in case anyone declines their spot, or can't attend for some reason.

Hi Kelsey,

Thank you for clearing that up for me! That makes a lot more sense now ?

I do not think Math 12 would be accepted in place of Math 11. They only require 4 courses. Chem 11, Math 11, Bio 12 and Eng 12 with your diploma. As far as I know they do not accept any substiution unless it's the university equivalent. You would have to retake Math 11 (I'm assuming you're retaking for a higher grade)

And yes [email protected]. is the correct place to ask any admission or program related questions.

Where else are you considering applying? When did you decide to go into nursing?

And no problem whatsoever. I'm very glad I can help!

Hi Kaitlyn!

Congrats on getting in! That's awesome!

Well if UFV does accept Math 12 instead of Math 11 that's wonderful!

Did you not do Math 11 at all?

Thanks, I didn’t take the spot because I got accepted to Camosun in Victoria which is where I live, I did take math 11 but I only got like 65% or something and I also found math 12 to be a lot easier than math 11

Well doesn't matter where you got accepted or chose to go as long as you got into nursing school! I know so many people trying, its not that easy, as you probably know. So Congrats! Good Luck at Camosun! Its so nice when you can stay at home/close to home.

Hello all!

My name is Ruth and this will be my first time applying to UFV for the BSN program. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me any advice on how to prepare for the essay part of the application. For example, how in depth should I know about nursing to feel comfortable going in to the info session? What are some important topic should I brush up on? Anything helps!

Hi Ruth

Welcome to AllNurses!

There is not much you can do to prepare for the essay. I would recommend reading the stuff from the BCCNP that UFV suggests. You don't need to know in depth nursing stuff. The purpose of the essay and interview is to show them how you think about things and what your views are. What you have learned in life and how you can relate those skills to nursing. Caring for people, time management, critical thinking, therapeutic conversational skills and so forth. They know that we aren't nurses (...yet) just be you.

Hope that helps!

Good Luck!

Hi Adelinna,

Thank you for letting me know. I just wish the admissions team would do a better job of replying to emails... I have tried getting in touch with them for months now at that email, but have not heard back once! I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will accept Math 12, but if not, then I may just have to take Math 11.

I am also considering applying to BCIT and TRU. I live in Surrey, so the ideal school would be BCIT because it's a lot closer to me than UFV, but I am still open to UFV because it's only a little over an hour's drive away. I am a bit worried about commuting to UFV during the winter/when it snows, though... ? I am in the last year of my undergrad degree at SFU (I'm majoring in Health Sciences), however, I didn't get the best grades during my undergrad, which is why I'm leaning towards nursing programs that consider high school courses as admission pre-reqs. I was looking into UBC's accelerated nursing program before even considering UFV, but realistically, I don't think I will get in lol.

I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, but I was never completely sure as to what profession. I did consider nursing when I was in grade 11/12, but have no idea why I didn't just stick with it after graduating. I decided to study health sciences at SFU in hopes of pursuing OT/PT, but after volunteering with rehab professionals for over a year, I realized that it wasn't for me, and that I was more interested in nursing, so here I am haha.

I am so thankful for all your help, and am keeping my fingers crossed that I am able to pursue my dream of becoming an RN. But first, I need to get into school, haha!

Hey Kaitlyn,

That's awesome! I think I may just take your word for it and retake Math 12 instead!

Thanks again and all the best with your nursing endeavours!

Hello,

I'm also applying to the January 2020 intake for nursing. As for the prerequisites, I'm sitting at:

  • Biol 12 - 96%
  • Engl 12 - 91%
  • Chem 11 - 93%
  • Precal 11 - 89%
  • Volunteer/work experience - I've been a Unit Coordinator at various ED departments in the lower mainland for the past four years

I've bookmarked this forum and I'll keep checking in and updating the others if I hear back from UFV. Good luck!
