UFV January 2020 Intake

Published

I will be applying into the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program at UFV for January 2020 Intake.
Currently have A-English B-Bio B-Chem and a B-Math of which math I will be upgrading this summer to an A, hopefully.

I am also a RCA and have a lot of volunteer experience as well in the health care field

Would this be a strong enough application? Also, if anyone has experienced the information session or interview please do mention how it works and if there's any way to prepare or sort of get a better idea on what they're expecting.

Thanks for the encouragement! ? And I think I found the excel sheet you're talking about... if I understand correctly, UFV's grading scale actually puts us at an advantage (right?) since an 80% is still considered an A whereas at most other places it would be some kind of B. That sure makes me happy lol. I'm aiming for at least 90s in all of my courses so they can count as A+'s, although I'm curious if UFV would favour someone with a 98% over someone with a 90% or if once the marks are inputted, they're all just seen as the same letter grade, regardless of percentage? Regardless, I'm going to try my best to do as well as I can in my courses lol. Do you mind sharing what your grades were? Also, did you submit the high school pre-reqs or the post-secondary ones? I've been volunteering at a seniors home for 6 years (since grade 11 and probably over 1000 hours ?) and was hired by the very same senior home to work in a recreation aide position as of 3 months ago. I have 1.5 years of experience working as a rec aide at another facility too and spent about a year volunteering with an OT at a high intensity rehab facility. Do you think my experience is good enough/on the competitive side?

I'm sorry to bombard this post with all of my questions, but there doesn't seem to be any forums for the September 2020 intake as of yet and I've been having lots of anxiety/stress since the past little while about getting admitted. Any help/input/advice is appreciated! I am super happy for all of you that got accepted, great job guys! ?

Yes I feel it does put people at an advantage for sure! I think if you had 90 and someone else had 98 you would both be given an invite to the info session since it’s in the same gpa bracket so I’m guessing the same amount of points is given! At that point it may be the work/volunteer experience that sets them apart! I only had 86 in pre-cal 11 and English 12 and 90 in chem and 92 in bio! (I applied with the high school pre-reqs) I work as a residential care aide but have no volunteer hours.

As for your experience, yes it is definitely at the competitive level!

And don’t worry at all! We all know how stressful the process is. My best advice for you is to also do any little courses or programs you can! part of the additional forms besides your work/volunteer experience is any other experience/certificates you have. SPECO is a really good one it’s online and free.

Thank you for the advice, that seems like a good idea! I have my Food Safe and Serving it Right certifications. If I mention them on the application, it probably makes sense for me to send in copies of them with my application, right? lol. And thank you so much for telling me about the SPECO certification. I had never heard about it before but I will definitely complete it. Thank you once again ?

I spoke with a UFV advisor about the grading system used and they told me this:

your high school grades that are used for your Prerequisites on your application are used with the high school grading scale.

ex: 84% = B 95% = A

if you are using a UFV course grade in your application. So you took BIO 111 and received a higher grade than in biology 12, then they would use the UFV grading scale.

ex: 84% = A- 95% = A+

It depends on what you used for your pre requisite for your application. If you used a high school course (ex pre calc 11 83%) UFV would consider it a B. If you used a UFV course (ex BIO 111 84%) UFV would consider it an A-. Four A+‘s give you 16/16.

this is how my grades were interpreted for my application.

Hi Oh_3,

Thank you for your reply. If that's the case, then that sure changes things for me ? Although, I'm not sure how that would really work since in high school (atleast on my high school transcript), there was no discrepancy between the different kinds of As and Bs. If I got a 96% in a high school course, it would still only be shown as an A on my transcript/report card and not an A+. Anything from a 73% to an 85% was graded as just a B (doesn't matter if it was a B-, B, or B+), and anything from an 86% to a 100% was graded as an A (doesn't matter if it was an A-, A, or A+). Were you accepted for the January 2020 intake? Do you mind sharing what pre-req grades you applied with?

Yes, so unfortunately your high school prerequisites will be considered as either an A or B, not an A-, A, A+. So yes, your course that you received a 96% in, UFV will consider as an A not an A+ in your application.

i was accepted in to the January 2020 Intake.

i applied with:

A - English 12

A - chemistry 11

A - Pre calc 11

A- - BIO 111 (Instead of grade 12 bio)

Hi Oh_3,

I followed up with UFV's admissions department about this, and you are right! But considering that most people get in to the program getting As in the high school pre-reqs anyways, I don't think it's really a disadvantage, so that's good.

Hey guys,

I am trying to submit my documents for the September 2020 intake, and wanted to ask if it's ok to send in the UFV application/First Aid + CPR/Driver's license to the Health Studies email? Or, do I need to submit these documents through the mail? Any help is appreciated ?

Hey,

It would be best if you dropped your application package at UFV Health Studies Office in Chilliwack.

Also guys, quick question: for those that are on the waitlist, have you heard back at all?

And what are the chances of getting off the waitlist?

Thank you.

Hi guys! I'm looking for advice from those of you that have been accepted into UFV nursing. I'm planning to apply for the Jan 2021 intake. I currently have an A+ in Bio 093, A- in Engl 105, B in Math (hoping to upgrade to an A) and have yet to take Chem. I also volunteer at a hospital and at an alzheimers care centre and should have well over 100 hours when I apply. Is there anything else I can do to increase my chance of getting in?
