UF accelerated BSN 2021

Hey everybody! Anyone applying for the above mentioned program? I haven't had luck finding any threads, in regard to this, for that specific year. I would like to find people who are so we can keep in touch through this process.

How intense would you say that the program is? I already don't have a life from focusing on my bachelors, so having a social life isn't important to me, but I have two daughters and I'm wondering how that will work out if I get accepted into the program. My husband is active duty Navy, so he will stay in Rhode Island, and I would be doing the program as a single mom (if accepted). I have family in Gainesville so they can take my girls when needed. I just need to prepare them in case they will have them most of the time.

Hey JTwin01!

I want to be honest without scaring/discouraging you. The program is VERY intense. There are a few people in my cohort who are working during it and many who have a family though! We use a group chat and I'd say everyone who regularly chats (~90% of us) were in agreement that the program is very hard and time consuming. For me it was an every day all day thing. There are many assignments, weekly huge exams, and SO much reading. Working together helped though, we would often share notes because it is not possible to read 80+ pages per class per week some weeks. Sometimes there would be weeks where it would be like "there is no way I can do all this" but somehow you manage and make it through. Many of us forgo social things and family time to do well, but not everyone. Personally I was shocked at the amount of work and time I had to put in to do well. It is doable and you may not have the same experience as me though. Your cohort will work together just as mine did and you will have a support system. It won't be easy with a family but is is not impossible!

I was SOOO hungry towards then end, too, and I ate an omelet right beforehand. The critical thinking part is not scored, that I can see. I just looked at the report of my test results. There is a personality style and a learning style test. It shows the results for those (for example I'm kinesthetic/analytical for learning style), but it doesn't show anything for the critical thinking part. The proctor was awesome, though! I had a problem with logging in, initially. I was so frustrated and in tears because I thought the test started without me. I was an hour past my test time when I finally got connected with a proctor. He was super nice and reassuring! I told him that I needed to take a bathroom break before I started and he let me go. He reassured me that I was okay and nothing started without me/would count against me because of the late start. Initially, it was a nightmare to start the exam, but that proctor made everything so much better!

If the learning style and critical thinking parts aren't scored then that makes me feel better about those sections. I'm glad your proctor was good and was able to fix your problems! I've taken online proctored exams but never through ProctorU. From what I've heard they seem to be the strictest when it comes to anti-cheating. Of course I'm not going to cheat but I just want to know what to expect. I an avid planner LOL

Hello everyone!

My name is Tori and I /was/ in the current cohort but I got sick and had to medically withdraw a few weeks ago ? I will be joining the next cohort with some (let's hope all!) of you. I am happy to answer any questions I can!

Hey Tori!

Since you got into it last year, how much do you think they looked at your HESI? Was it a big factor in determining who got in or not? Also when you started in the Summer, when did you start? like what was the Summer semester length? More specifically, when did the Summer portion end?

Hello!
It's hard to say how they weigh things because they don't tell us. I think it really is holistic somehow. Some people had lower HESI scores but had years of experience and got in, etc. Personally I did really well on HESI and had 5 years of mixed experience, but some of my prereq grades weren't stellar (even a C in one or two). I think experience is probably what they like best since it is so fast paced they want you to have baseline knowledge. Summer orientation (via zoom) was the first week of May and classes began the second. We follow the university calendar. Classes ended I think the second week of Aug? It's Summer "C". Hope that helps!

Thank you for being honest. I do appreciate that. My twin sister went to nursing school. It was a different school in Ocala, though. It was still very time consuming for her, as well. I expect to have no life, and I have heard that the only way to make it through nursing school is study groups. It does make me a little nervous, but the fact that it's only fifteen months make it a little more doable. If I don't get accepted, then I'm paying for UF's online masters in Public Health. I'm working on an online bachelors right now and it is very socially isolating! IDK if I can continue to do online classes for a degree. Having more of a social support, even just for school, would be amazing!

I totally get that. I went into the exam knowing nothing about what it was going to be like. I had taken an exam with ProctorU before and I had taken the TEAS on-site at a university in San Diego, so I kind of just guessed from those experiences how it would be. It's much the same as taking it on-site somewhere, it's just in the comfort of your own home! ?

Hi Tori,

Did they let you drop out of this cohort and automatically go to the next since you got sick, or do you have to apply all over again?

I  do not have to reapply in my specific case.

That's really great of them to do that! I was accepted into a nursing school in California. I was able to defer my start date for up to a year, but eventually I had to give it up due to health reasons. I'm glad that they let you start with the next cohort. I know how it feels to work so hard to get in only to lose my spot.

Does it say anywhere what sections of the HESI we will be tested on? I've read that they don't do Chemistry but are there any other ones they don't do?

I emailed (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) a while back and she responded: “The required examination areas for the University of Florida College of Nursing include: Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Grammar, Math, Reading Comprehension, Critical Thinking, Learning and Personality Style.” So, no physics either!

For those who were wondering about the HESI, I just finished taking it through UF and ProctorU. When I opened ProctorU, it tested my computer's camera and microphone, took a picture of me, and took a picture of my ID. Then it took me straight to the exam and I was freaking out because I didn't think there was anyone actually proctoring me but I was too scared to click the exit button. I never had to show my room or talk to the proctor so I knew something was wrong. But my camera light was on and there was a notification saying that ProctorU was recording my screen so I just went with it. After a few sections, the green camera light went off and I decided to exit the exam. I waited about 5 minutes to chat with a real person (freaking out the whole time that I might not be able to re-enter the exam) and then they told me my proctor had to let me back in. I eventually was able to download the software where I could talk to a proctor and he said everything was fine but it was a good thing I exited or my exam might not have been valid. Anyways, it ended up alright but I was a distracted during the beginning thinking about how my exam might not be scored. To answer some questions I had about the exam: there is a calculator (it's very basic and you have to hand click the buttons on the screen, but it works). I didn't realize that the math section would have "type in the answer" questions in addition to multiple choice so just be aware of that. My proctor allowed me to have a water bottle on my desk. I was allowed one sheet of blank scratch paper and I used the entire thing front and back. I was told I couldn't take a bathroom break but after my whole debacle, my proctor let me go before I was logged back into my exam. The exam was 3 hours but there is no timer on the page. I also wasn't able to see my laptop's clock so I had no idea how I was doing on timing. The sections aren't individually timed, you just have 3 hours to complete all the sections in any order you prefer. The sections we didn't need to complete weren't shown (Chemistry, physics, vocab). Once I had a proctor, I couldn't see them but I could talk to them through the microphone and text chat. The critical thinking section was like what other people in this group described. It's 30 questions where you have to determine what the best option is for a patient given the circumstances. I just googled quizlets for that section to study and it was very similar. I was given a score for that part during the exam, but my score report doesn't show it. The learning style and personality style sections were each 15 questions and just ask things about how you would describe yourself. Compared to the TEAS, I felt like the questions were harder (except for grammar) but I ended up doing better somehow LOL
