UCSF MEPN 2016

Published

Hello!

I know this is a bit early, but I'm planning to apply to the apply to the UCSF MEPN program (among a few others) this summer/fall. I've seen similar forums for past application periods, and thought it might be nice to get one started so we can start to bounce ideas and questions off each other.

Has anyone been to an open house? Any information worth sharing?

I'm hoping to apply next school year and looking at the prereqs, I just wanted to double check with people who have already applied if I need to have two classes is micro, two classes of physio.. Etc Etc? Because my classes were just one semesters each...

Hey all, I am a 2015 MEPN and used this resource last year. I know it's a little late in the game, but I'm seeing this for the first time now. If you have any questions I can answer, feel free to ask away. Good luck!

Hi! I have two questions, if you'll be so kind to answer them :) 1) if my prereqs were only one semester long, as in my micro, physio etc were lecture and lab but only one semester, do I need to take two classes of each of those prereqs?? 2) is my cumulative gpa, gpa from my undergrad university + prereqs from all my community college as well?? Or strictly just from my undergrad university gpa??

Hi, darthb.

I was wondering if you might tell us about your experiences in the program. What you like/don't like. I haven't had the chance to go to an info session (I live down in LA and am crazy busy with school/work), but I would love to hear from people who are going through the program right now. Thanks.

Hi all, I'm also a current MEPN (darthb, who are you? i'm the ASSN A rep).

@JennChoi - your classes can be one semester but need to have a lab. For more specific questions email the dude in charge of admissions (we can't post his name here) - he's super helpful and will let you know on a case-by-case basis if your prereq qualifies. I believe cumulative GPA is all classes you've taken, but I went to a school without grades, so I'm not the expert on that.

@gatewood - Things I've loved so far: clinical experiences and clinical instructors, my classmates, the med-surg professor I have this fall, lunchtime talks, my advisor. Not going to lie, the summer semester was super tough for reasons I did not expect. Our cohort had some real problems with the summer professors (which will almost certainly be different for next year's cohort.) I think it would have gone better for us, too, if we'd had the summer introduced to us as a kind of academic bootcamp. There aren't many other students/events/lectures etc. going on during the summer and I think that many of the things that were reasons we chose UCSF weren't around. Things both calm down and get more interesting after the first quarter.

Happy to answer other questions if folks have any.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply!!!!

This program is my number one, most ideal case, but I know just how competitive it is, so I am also thinking of doing Accelerated BSN and then apply again for their masters program but not giving up yet!!! Thank you again :)

Dear Tenta,

Thank you so much for this kind and informative reply to my questions. I really appreciate it! I hope I get the chance to meet you at some point and thank you in person!

Hi @tenta -- can you tell us more about summer session and the difficulty you experienced? Was there attrition? If so, for which reasons (if you know)? If you're comfortable, can you also share your stats (I feel confident in everything except GRE scores).

Thank you!!

Hi @gatewood -- can you also share your knowledge about being on an admissions committee? Beside the GPA, what else do committees look to first as a way to weed people out?

Thank you!

Hi @roadsidefireworks

Every committee is different and looks for different things in its applicants. I used to be a college teacher, and when I sat on a committee we looked for a combination of things: grades, life experiences, and individual stories. One thing I can say is that you are looking to make up a class of individuals who reflect the diversity of the communities in which you live. You want people who you know can excel but who will bring something unique to each class. As I said, this is a limited experience and not at all reflective of what a committee such as this one might be looking for. The good news is that these committees are very hard working and they will give your application the attention it deserves. Good luck! I wish you the very best in this process.

Thanks for sharing @gatewood :)

About one month to go until invitations to interview and initial deny letters go out. How is everybody doing with the wait?

Driving me crazy! I just want to know if and where I'm moving... Feel stuck in my hometown doing the same old thing at this point. I'm worried, excited, and anxious to say the least :)
