UCSF MEPN 2016

Published

Hello!

I know this is a bit early, but I'm planning to apply to the apply to the UCSF MEPN program (among a few others) this summer/fall. I've seen similar forums for past application periods, and thought it might be nice to get one started so we can start to bounce ideas and questions off each other.

Has anyone been to an open house? Any information worth sharing?

Hi! I will be in that pool too. I went to the info session--it was informative but a mixed crowd, so not all was about MEPN. It primarily focused on Nursing programs at UCSF in general. I found most of the info could be found online. Although it was nice to put faces to names and meet friendly people.

Anxiously waiting for the application to be launched. I created a login but only see Dental and PT programs listed. Maybe it's still too early?

Specializes in mental health / psychiatic nursing.

AlldogseastKiwi - it is still too early; I believe the application opens July 15th.

I am still debating if I am going to apply. There are a lot of good things about UCSF, but it closes well before most other schools (Sept 1) which means it's a bit of a push for me to get everything done. I might run through the application though and see how feasible it is to fill out and also use it as a test run to make sure I have all the documentation I need for other programs lined up.

I haven't seen the MEPN application as an option yet either. The site does just say July though, not July 1st.

I would think if it's not up today that it probably won't be up until next week or later.

I agree it's going to be a bit of a push to get everything ready in time. I think I'm most nervous about giving my references enough time to write their letters, but we'll see how it goes!

Hi--I am also applying for this cycle, but will probably not make it to an open house, since I am on the East Coast. What specialty are you all interested in?

I'm on the east coast too! I'll actually be in SF the first week of September though- it'll be too late for application help, but maybe I'll get some helpful information to share.

I'm applying to the FNP specialty. What about everyone else?

Oh, nice! I'm applying for PMHNP

Hi everyone! I'm re-applying to UCSF this year for FNP. If any of you have followed last year's thread, I was one of the candidates who made it to the interview round, didn't ultimately get in, but was selected for a follow up conversation. So, if you guys have any questions about the process, I'd be happy to answer them.

fpjc, I would be interested to know what you learned (if anything) after talking to admissions last year once you found out you did not get accepted. Also, what, if anything, did you do to "beef up" your chances of getting accepted this year?

I will be applying this year too, undecided between FNP and PNP (I guess its about time to decide!!)

Thanks!

@futurenp2019 - In my follow up call, they said that overall I was a solid candidate but needed more experience with NPs. I've volunteered at a hospital since the end of 2013, but have been mostly around physicians and PAs. So this year, I'm looking for shadowing opportunities with NPs. I've also interviewed a few NPs to get a better understanding of the profession and have more ways to express why this is what I want to do and why I would be good at it.

Hope that helps!

Also, I collected some stats from the people who got accepted last year, if anyone is interested.

@fpjc it would be really great to hear stats of people who have gotten accepted.

also, regarding experience with NPs, I too have minimal experience. I am hoping to shadow some NPs but am not sure if I can get it in before the application is due. Do you think it is important to have the shadowing experience down on paper, or just to have it to talk about when you have your interview?

Thanks again, Happy 4th!

I'm applying to the midwifery program this year. Is anyone in the same boat?

I also wondered why the application wasn't open it. I assumed when they said it would open in July that it would be July 1st, but that's obviously not the case. I really depended on that to get further information about what to write for the goals statement and the personal history statement. I didn't know there were two essays required until I read these threads, so I'm pretty late. Does anyone know where I can find the actual prompts, if anyone posted them from previous years? I've requested letters but it's difficult from the writers to start when I can't give them my personal statement as reference so I'm really nervous :/
