Has anyone heard anything back from the UCLA New Grad Summer Program for 2010? I applied in the beginning of February and have only had a phone interview so far, with no feedback yet. Any info or others' experience would be much appreciated, thank you!

Right there with you Potassium! Still three weeks, but getting more and more excited every day. Can't wait to meet all of you that will be starting at UCLA (especially all you PICU people)!

I am very excited...but also kind of terrified!

Specializes in PICU, OB/GYN.

I am incredibly excited...as excited as I am nervous!! PICU will be wonderful!! Found a place to live, everything is coming together nicely! Now I just need to start packing...ugh.

Same here! But I still have about 3 or 4 weeks of break until I start! Going to make the best of it!

Specializes in OR.

Got tired of waiting to hear back from the OR, so I called and was offered a position! Won't start til 3/28 but I couldn't be more excited!

Congrats to everyone! I got a position in the MICU, my start date is on friday the 11th!

For those who have moved close to the hospital, could you tell me what area you moved to specifically and the pricing? I'm also on the quest for relocating. I'm in East LA and I HATE downtown traffic!

I am excited to start too in PEDs at SM but I havent heard anything back yet about the exact start date. Does anyone have any information? I tried to contact the unit director by email but no response yet. I know its sometime in beginning of March but it would be nice to know what date! SO super happy and nervous!

On another note. I live in SD and cant break my lease until august or else I get charged ALOT! So the other option was to transfer with no cost to another apartment facility within the same company and the closest I could get was in Orange County around huntington beach/costa mesa area without paying a fortune compared to areas around the hospital. I mapquested the route and says it is about 45 miles from hospital. My question is, does anyone who lives in the area, think the traffic will cause me a headache to drive back and forth for work? Ive only been in Cali for 8 months and dont really know shortcuts and such but I do know the 405 is a nightmare!

Thank for your help and good luck to everyone!

Dont do it!!! ... no, really, you do not want to do Orange County to UCLA. On a good day it will be 1.5 hours and most days are not good, even weekends are very busy between OC and LA. If you do not mind a 2 hour commute, a rather unfriendly-trafficky kind of commute, then it may not bother you - and if will move in Aug, maybe you are willing...? But it will not be a nice commute. I imagine with the gas you will use up, it will be better to get to at least Torrance, but even better would be Venice/Palms/Mar Vista/Rancho Park/Culver City/.

Also, consider the San Fernando Valley areas: Encino/Tarzana/Sherman Oaks/Studio City/Valley Village - the communities near the 101 x 405 fwys. Also, Westwood has some pretty good deals if you dont mind rooming with students.

What are some LA areas they have to offer you?

Good luck

Really? I don't mind driving at max an hr to work but is the traffic really that bad. I really doNt have a choice I guess because the properties the company owns in downtown LA, marina del Rey and west La are high for a one bedroom. Like starting at 1700- 6000 for a 1 bed!! I don't want roomates bc I live with my fiancé and he does not want that at all, neither do I really. Lol. But they have alot of apartments in OC that we can afford. I guess is better than driving from San Diego to the hospital. It took me 2.5hrs and 4hrs to get back home due to traffic! I'm sooo lost on wat to do bc the only way to avoid $2000 fine for breaking lease and on top of that paying th monthly rent for every month no one rents our place out til august is outrageous. I will be in more debt than I already am!!

Well I guess I will see how it goes and try to transfer after 6mos or so. I might be able to afford to break lease for an area closer to hospital!!

Thanks 4 help!!

The traffic situation is very realistic. Google maps shows this from costa mesa:

  1. 1.
    57 mins
1 hour 30 mins in traffic
    I-405 S
    50.9 mi

  2. 2.
    1 hour 3 mins
3 hours 10 mins in traffic
    I-10 E and I-5 S
    55.8 mi

  3. 3.
    1 hour 3 mins
1 hour 50 mins in traffic
    I-110 S and I-405 S
    56.3 mi

Maybe if you get a mid-shift, like 12-12:30 or 2-2:30, you might get lucky with about 1 hour and 15 mins, but if you are 7-7:30, it will not be pleasant.

An hour is not bad if you are actually driving, but one hour at an average of 30 mph is no fun!

On another note, UCLA has excellent carpool possibilities....

Good luck to you...

i know of many people who live in long beach and work at UCLA and dont mind the commute at all. not sure what the schedule will be like the first couple of months, but if you think about it 3 days a week wont be to many days of driving. And for sure look into UCLA vanpool.
