UCLA MECN Fall 2011

Published

Hello,

I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.

congratulations to those who have been admitted thus far!!

goguemah -- wow, you have so much healthcare experience! i feel my lack of experience most likely worked against me. i appreciate you sharing that you were denied twice and encouraging those of us who didn't get in. the fact that you persevered and have now been accepted serves as great inspiration for me. thank you.

Went to UCSD. B.S. Human Biology. GPA 3.25

1 year of personal caregiver

1 year of Certified Nursing Assistant at nursing home

About a half year of being Research Coordinator at Childrens Hospital LA. (This was volunteering.. like 16 hrs a week haha)

About a year now of Patient Care Service Aide at Childrens Hospital.

I took some prereq classes from community colleges, and I still have to take the Epi class during the summer.

I was worried about UCLA because my GPA was low and I couldn't appeal myself because there was no interview...

But boy am I relieved now! =)

Thx lilpeapods,

Although I wasn't rejected from UCLA, but did from UCSF... Twice..

I applied to UCSF (my top choice) thinking I could live near my girlfriend who is in Berkeley. But man that program was competitive..

For UCLA, I waited until I thought I had enough of healthcare experience. I purely focused on getting experience for two years after college and man was it difficult taking classes while taking on several jobs. But now I am glad I was able to pull through it and be where I am. This I believe is just a start though. I heard from MECN students that it was a very rigorous program!

Congrats Goguemah! From what I remember from the info session and from my friends at the MECN program already, it sounds like they are looking just as much at professional and volunteer experience as they are grades. I think being a nurse is alot more than just a GPA. Sounds like you already have some great experience! I hope that I will receive good news today and will be able to celebrate as well!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I got my letter today and I've been wait-listed. Does anyone know how far down the wait-list they typically go for the MECN program?

Waitlisted is better than rejected right??! RIGHT!

Did they tell you your ranking on the letter??

Good luck!

Yes, they did give me a number and I will say that it's in the single digits which is great, but I know that nothing is for sure. I guess I'll find out March 18 when all the people who've been accepted make their final decisions!

well great! good for you. I hope you get in. It sounded to me like they do take people from the waitlist. Remember that for some UCLA is not their top choice. I'm actually waitlisted at my top choice so I know exactly how you feel.

Best of luck!!

JulsieQ congrats! I recall from the info session that on average they accept ~10 from the waitlist. Best of luck!

They mentioned that they usually go down approximately 10?? I really hope that's true!

JulsieQ, I heard that last year they accepted about 18-20 from the wait list:), so you have a big chance, good luck!

My mail just came, and I couldn't believe what I saw. I got accepted!!! :D Good luck to all of you who still haven't heard yet;)

A question for those who have been accepted: Do you have a math/science background (i.e. BS degree) and healthcare experience such as being a CNA or volunteering at a hospital?

I'm trying to figure out how I can improve my application the next go-around!
