UBC 2021

Published

Hiya folks!

It's a bit early, but since the application period opens in a couple of months, I thought I'd start this topic to share support/encouraging words/info/nervousness.

Is anyone else already excited for next September?

Thank you for the responses about the schedule, super helpful! I thought you had to do some overnight shifts but I guess the latest you work is till 10pm? Or maybe the overnight shifts come later?

Also, in your clinical placements, do you find any truth that "nurses eat their young?" Or have people been helpful and welcoming? Also, what's the age range in your cohort and do you feel like you have any free time?

Haha, my friend used that exact phrase at the beginning of Clinical LOL.

Mm, I haven't personally experienced that at Clinical as the nurses I've had are very friendly and would invite us to join them for new assessments they're about to do on a patient. In addition to my clinical instructor, I've been able to approach the nurse directly and ask for tips with certain patients and scenarios.

But I think that depends, my friend noticed on the first day at Clinical that the nurses on her unit were very busy and us student nurses "got in their way." However, she doesn't think that as much right now as we're all administering medications to patients, we're more helpful now haha.

I think the average age is 25? Youngest is probably 21? and then oldest is 45? We have people who were in their 3rd year of undergrad, but most of us have completed a Bachelor's degree, there's also a few who have their Master's.

I feel that we always have something to do, you can get caught up on your readings, but you can always read ahead. So I find that we don't have a lot of "free time," there are weeks where it's more stressful than others because you have case studies/papers/quizzes every other day. You get 2 days off in a row with no class a week so it's not bad and you get Fridays off in Term 1.

Do they tell you how many applicants applied in late April (around that time?) or after the December 1st, 2020 deadline (closer to this date)?

I'm just curious how many people applied this year and if the pandemic will affect it.

For me, I am hoping to improve my casper score this year as last year I felt it went horribly and I ranked 3 out of 4 on it. I believe it was my casper score that sent me down the waitlist last year.

Hey medsister! Do you mind me asking what GPA you applied with? and if you had completed a degree at the time for your last application?

Last year, I applied with 4.0 GPA on a 4.33 scale and received a 1 in that category. This year my GPA went up to 4.20 after completing the anatomy pre-requisites. I am a 4th year UBC student with no degree. I don't believe UBC prioritizes degree holders.

How about you? Is this your first time applying?

Wait, you didn't get in with a 4.00 GPA?

I'm expecting my GPA to be like 3.20-3.30 with the courses I am taking this fall. Yikes! I feel like my application in general might be borderline or not competitive at all :S

Nope but I think my casper is what held me back, I got a 3 which I don't think is competitive enough. I have no idea how they rank GPA so hard to say. How did you feel about your Casper?

#2. I noticed the supplemental this year has 2 long questions in the end that the previous one didn't have. Yes, good luck to us all! LOL

There was only one question I was kind of stuck on and didn't really feel like I answered my best, other than that I think it went really well. Typing the answers out was not an issue for me as I found others may practise their typing speed? My WPM is around 80-88 on average. Sometimes I'm way slower, sometimes I'm 100+ WPM. This may be a factor?

But yeah, it went well overall.

After you had done the Casper, did you feel optimistic about it or did you have an inkling that it could have gone better? Did you do anything this year to prepare for taking it again? I've heard that it's almost impossible to prepare for.

I watched the BSN Information presentation on November 13, 2020 and the previous cohort GPA was 83%, where the range was 74-90%.

I definately thought I could have done better because I was getting cut off mid sentence on almost every single scenario. I watched those BeMo videos and they are helpful but their responses are alot longer than what I actually had time to type. I didn't find the scenarios that difficult, I just found the time constraint difficult to be able to coherently express myself and I was losing time on trying to fix my spelling errors because you can't fix it automatically like in Word. That being said, I am more hopeful casper will go better for me this cycle. I think its good to time yourself and write out the responses for practice.
