UBC 2021

Published

Hiya folks!

It's a bit early, but since the application period opens in a couple of months, I thought I'd start this topic to share support/encouraging words/info/nervousness.

Is anyone else already excited for next September?

I applied with a biochem degree, 89% GPA on my last 30 credits, health clinic volunteer work, homeless shelter volunteer work, Chemistry tutor work experience, and some other work experience in customer service.  I was waitlisted and was scored 2 for academic, 2 for Casper, and 3 for my supplemental. I didn’t really have anything to put in the school involvement section though, which I think probably hurt my supplemental a lot. My wait list spot was in the 30’s, and I got an offer in mid June ?

Hi! Thank you for the information ? May I ask approximately how long before the deadline you applied?

How did an 89 get you a 2!?? I'm so confused!

Just shows how crazy competitive the program is. It's a shame they weigh a silly test like casper so heavily.

OMG I have an 89% GPA guess I'm gonna score a 2 ?

For the scores (it's 1-4?), is the lower number better, or the higher? I forget. I tried to quickly find it on the UBC website but didn't find anything

1 is top 25, 2 top 50 and so on ?

89% is a 2... it might even be harder this year bc there are more applicants

RIP

Yeah, it looks like everyone on this forum or the ones I have seen have an average of at least 86%! I am a little discouraged, to be honest. Everyone here is so amazing! How does one stand out?

supplemental tbh, it’s the only thing we can control (besides grades)

Is anyone else applying with under an 80 average? I feel like my application will not be competitive enough to receive an acceptance ?

My GPA is around 3.0 -3.3 and I got a 4 two years ago when I applied...I'm praying I get a 1 on CASper and supplemental. Honestly, I have no idea what to think, but I beefed up my volunteer and relevant experience and worked super hard on my supplemental...so who knows. Don't lose hope and apply to other schools ?

I have just under 80 average. IMO I have a very strong supplemental application. I've taken care of foster children with medical needs, worked in addictions on the Downtown Eastside for years, fair amount of volunteer work and did the Care Aid certificate at Douglas. I know a lot of folks that have done the UBC program and a fair number of them had GPA's in the 70's. I think it will really depend on how strong your supplemental application is and your CASPER score. I hate not knowing my CASPER score. I'm frantically working to get through the Anatomy and Physiology pre req and if I knew how I did on CASPER it would help motivate me to get through it...or not. If I don't get in I think it will be the CASPER score that does it for me.

Your situation sounds alot like mine!! Where are you taking the Anatomy and Physiology? I'm taking it through Athabasca and it's hard to stay on top of it!!

Keep in mind, alot of people are sitting at home during covid thinking they need a career change and that nursing is an easy switch. I'm banking on a lot of applicants not having the requirements.
