UBC 2021

Published

Hiya folks!

It's a bit early, but since the application period opens in a couple of months, I thought I'd start this topic to share support/encouraging words/info/nervousness.

Is anyone else already excited for next September?

Hi guys!

Does anyone have an idea when we can expect interview decisions, and also when final decisions generally come out?

May ?

Wait.
Does UBC BSN have an interview? (I applied to a bunch of different programs and am probably mixing things up ?)

Hey! I’m in the current upper cohort ? Unfortunately none of the placements including preceptorship are paid. ESN is a paid job which you can apply for after term 3, it is not connected to the nursing program at all and so is completely additional to the program school work and clincial/preceptorship.

Does UBC require a certain colour/ brand for scrubs/ shoes in the clinicals? I currently work in healthcare and need to buy some more scrubs and shoes, and I might as well pick ones that would work for UBC (or do they require students to use their branded scrubs?).

I don’t believe so!

Yes they have branded scrubs! I believe it's on the BSN page somewhere were it tells you where you can get them and what colour they are

Nope, no interview. The website says "The admission decisions will be based on academic standing, assessment of the Nursing Supplemental Application by the BSN Program, and CASPer results."

Is anyone else applying with under an 80 average? I feel like my application will not be competitive enough to receive an acceptance ?

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it since I've noticed in previous years where people who scored a 1 in grades were still rejected and not even offered a spot on the waitlist whereas those who scored a 2 in grades but did well in the supplementary and CASPer were offered spots on the waitlist or even accepted!

Do you mind sharing what you applied with?

I have just under 80 average. IMO I have a very strong supplemental application. I've taken care of foster children with medical needs, worked in addictions on the Downtown Eastside for years, fair amount of volunteer work and did the Care Aid certificate at Douglas. I know a lot of folks that have done the UBC program and a fair number of them had GPA's in the 70's. I think it will really depend on how strong your supplemental application is and your CASPER score. I hate not knowing my CASPER score. I'm frantically working to get through the Anatomy and Physiology pre req and if I knew how I did on CASPER it would help motivate me to get through it...or not. If I don't get in I think it will be the CASPER score that does it for me.

I applied with a biochem degree, 89% GPA on my last 30 credits, health clinic volunteer work, homeless shelter volunteer work, Chemistry tutor work experience, and some other work experience in customer service.  I was waitlisted and was scored 2 for academic, 2 for Casper, and 3 for my supplemental. I didn’t really have anything to put in the school involvement section though, which I think probably hurt my supplemental a lot. My wait list spot was in the 30’s, and I got an offer in mid June ?

Yes, I'm banking on the supplement and CASPer :')
