UBC Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anybody is also applying to the UBC Nursing program this year for the 2009 intake...and also, for those that are in the program, or have graduated from the program, would you kindly please tell me what the program is like, as well as your admission average (based on the 30 credits that UBC Nursing looks at) and your supplemental application...to better prep myself for the application process.

thanks in advance.

I'm in first year for BCIT. For BCIT there isn't a group interview anymore. Its just an essay and the forms that you have to fill out.

Hey coast, yes I have a BA in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. Well... I will once I graduate this June :). I haven't applied to BCIT, and to tell you the truth I didn't even know about the school until I joined this forum! But it's good to hear they don't offer an interview anymore... it's such a daunting task and I'm sure it takes off a lot of pressure from applying students!!

What about the nursing program at Alberta? Have you heard anything good/bad about it? :)

Kinesiology sounds like a great fit with Nursing! Are you taking this at UBC?

I do know a couple of folks who have taken the Nursing program in Alberta and have heard good things about the 4 year program, but negative things of the 2 year program. I think its hard to fit Nursing in 2 years. It sounds like you really have to prepare yourself!

And yes it is nice to hear that BCIT will not be having interviews....best of luck on getting an interview at UBC, you will have to keep me posted if you hear anything, and I will do the same

I work in Alberta. The problems that we see with the two year accelerated degree is the fact that most of the people doing the degree don't want to have contact with the human body. They all want to go direct to management, they don't want to put the time in to hone their skills and learn their craft. Two years in no way gives anyone the knowledge and experience required to run a nursing unit in an acute care setting.

It' isn't hard to fit the actual hands on, physical aspect of nursing into two years. It's hard to fit in the management and filler courses.

Well that is good hear considering I'm hoping to be accepted into a two-year program.

I went to a BCIT info session a few months ago, and they said all applicants should be notified of their status by the end of april. however, I know someone who applied for the january intake and heard in mid-october. so it seems like we are still going to be waiting awhile!

Hello All,

I just got a letter from BCIT saying that I need to write an essay about PBL? aka Problem Based Learning. Anyone out there get the same letter? I think its a good sign?

Still waiting to hear from UBC....anyone heard from them yet?

Fingers are crossed

I asked the UBC nursing admission committee--they aim to have the invitations for interviews sent out by the end of the 2nd week of April...which is getting awfully close as we speak. *crosses toes too*

Hey coastliving,

I was just wondering, are they asking you to write an essay and then send it in? Or are you expected to write it at the group meeting/interview?

Angel

I'm asked to write the essay and then send it in by April 15th, and then after that there will be an interview if the essay is good? Did you apply to BCIT Angel?

No... I didn't but I'm planning to apply this summer. Hoping to get in for January 2010! What was your GPA (if you don't mind me asking)? Did you complete a bachelor's before applying? etc.
