UBC Nursing - September 2013

Published

Hey Everyone!

I'm hoping to apply for UBC nursing 2013, but I am a little worried as I haven't volunteered for 2 years. My question is, if I get back into volunteering this summer will my chances of being accepted be higher?

Thank you!

Yeah as they say in the PDF they reference in the email:

Attributes assessed for scoring:

respect for others, regardless of their sex, race, cultural

background, beliefs or marital status. Does not exhibit

or support discrimination and aims to provide patientcentred care at all times.

• Compassion and empathy — describes the need to

advocate for the rights of the client. Demonstrates an

understanding of the multiple factors that may influence

an individual’s or a family’s response.

• Effective communication — demonstrates verbal

skills, engagement with the interviewer, behaviour

under stress, assertiveness with grace, ability to coach

and counsel, self-confidence and self-awareness;

presents reasoning clearly

• Critical thinking and effective decision-making —

awareness of a range of perspectives, ability to tolerate

ambiguity and uncertainty; shows flexibility

You can't really prepare for or fake that *** . Either you have that sensibility or you dont. The most you can do is be chilled out and not work yourself up with nervousness.

Specializes in OR.

Good luck to all of you, I hope you all love nursing as much as I do!

wonder how it went today

Had the interview this morning and now the waiting begins..

Questions were really not that bad. I thought the interview was a mix of critical thinking, having work ethics, and knowing who you are and why you are pursuing nursing. Interviewers were super nice and made me feel comfortable.

I wish everyone good luck!

Thank you Hyoon. Sounds like you had a good experience which is awesome!

Good luck to all!! I'm sure everyone will rock it :)

Yeah really enjoyed it today. Everyone was very friendly and supportive. Just don't freak out and have fun with it and you'll be fine!

Did you have to speak for five minutes straight?

You go to a short orientation in a classroom, then get divided into two groups of 6 applicants. Each group goes to a hallway with a series of 6 stations. You spend 2 minutes reading the question on the door, go in and spend 6 minutes talking to the interviewer. Sometimes you'll talk for a long time on your own, sometimes the interviewer will ask a question or follow-up question. If you're finished discussing the topic, you can stop talking about it and just chat with the interviewer (this doesn't count towards your score). Once you're finished at one station you immediately go to the next, until you're done all 6! I felt like it went by really quickly once I got started, and 6 minutes is a good amount of time to explore each scenario. I think the responses for the scenarios should be intuitive for people who have a some experience in helping/caring work, or who have education in social sciences/critical thinking skills, and have thought a bit about ethical issues.

My interview is tomorrow! Getting extremely nervous but very excited for the experience.

Were you able to carry pen and paper? Last year it was allowed but I am not sure about this year.

My interview is tomorrow as well. Been reading up on ethical topics all day!
