Hey Everyone!
I'm hoping to apply for UBC nursing 2013, but I am a little worried as I haven't volunteered for 2 years. My question is, if I get back into volunteering this summer will my chances of being accepted be higher?
Thank you!
Just for anyone's future reference, I have never worked or volunteered in a hospital or any healthcare setting. I currently work at a homeless shelter and I have a BA Hon in political science.
So I don't think you necessarily need to fit into the healthcare mold to get an interview. I think it's more important to express in the supplemental not just what you have done but what you have LEARNED from it and how it impacted you and (if relevant) how that learning and experience translates to a potential career in nursing. As long as you have some experiences that involve empathy, listening, critical thinking, and communication, you can make those relevant to how you would conduct yourself as a nurse. So don't stress it about working at a hospital or LTC facility. Do what you love (hopefully it's working with people in need) and try to see the larger picture.
They want to see that you can make broad, systemic connections from a wide range of information and experiences. They want to see that you have a general understanding of the profession and health care in Canada and what the country and citizens will need in the immediate and distant future. They want to see that you can connect with people of a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Try to gain experience that allows you to talk confidently about these skills and then be sure to use all of the space in the supplemental to make your case (without being wordy, "brevity is the soul of wit")
Just some tips based on my understanding of the supplemental and what they wanted.
Cheers!
For those people invited for an interview, is there a way to see what our scores were for the supplemental? I don't see mine anywhere
I didn't see it anywhere so you might want to email the person who sent you the invitation and see if she can let you know where you stood. Also congrats on the invite!
Hey all!
I'll be flying to Vancouver on the 17th for my interview that's on the 19th and leaving on the 20th. Is anyone here from the area and have any recommendations on where to stay that's reasonably affordable? Or is anyone else heading to Vancouver around the same time and feel comfortable sharing a hotel room or another accommodation? I'd be happy to Skype or FaceTime, whatever makes you feel comfortable, I'm just really trying to reduce the cost of this trip!!
Private message me (or email me @ [email protected]) if you're interested!!

I definitely wouldn't go too cheap because you don't want to bring any bed bugs back to your home.

I got rejected as well. My gpa was close to the average of people that got in but my supplemental score was terrible. I don't know if my experiences were just not as impressive or if my writing skills are to blame. Or maybe both. I just wish I knew how to improve my supplemental for next time.
Good luck to everyone this year and next! :)
