Hello,
I'm new to the site and I saw the thread for last years appilcants to UBC nursing so I thought I would start one for this year.
How is the application going for everyone, any tips from 2010 intake?
hey guys,
best of luck to all of you... I am currently half way through the first year at UBC nursing and the interview is not that bad at all. Everyone is super nice and they make you feel very comfortable. I found out I was accepted 1-2 weeks after my interview so just relax, take your time to answer the questions and enjoy it. Once you have an interview your GPA no longer matters and it is just based on your interview mark so CONGRATS for getting this far.
For those of you that did not get an interview.... try again next year! Nursing is great!!!
For anyone reading this forum who has been through this process (k_mb, diffindo, etc.) what type of preparation did you do? I have been browsing the Canadian Ethics Guide for Nursing, and actually spending a lot of time on here reading up about recent issues with nursing, but is there anything you did (or didn't do) that you remember using in your interview, or feeling glad about having reviewed or brushed up on?
Thanks!
Congrats for getting the invites!
I have been in the program for 2 terms and I have been enjoying my time here in ubc nursing as well. As for the MMI, I, too, did not have much time to really prepare for it as my interview was a day after I was done all my finals in my 4th year. The questions themselves were quite a mixture of nursing ethics, critical thinking, current healthcare issues, and personal aspirations. I tried reading up on the CRNBC webpage but, IMO, it didn't really help me in any direct sense during the interviews. However, reading up about nursing standards and nursing roles did help me to get a sense of what nurses do professionally, which gave me some basis to form my answers at the MMI.
Hope this helps and good luck to you all! :)
I have to say I didn't prepare much for the interview process... it is kind of hard to do so. I just kinda looked into what MMI interviews are like and googled for some sample questions. Most of what I found were med school questions so not totally applicable.
Really the questions are not super difficult. You don't need to "know" anything. It would be good to have an idea of what nurses do just for yourself but they don't ask specific questions that would require you to have done some research. It really comes down to just knowing yourself, knowing your personal values/morals and knowing what you believe in. Most of the questions are just so the interviewer can get a good sense of who you are. If I remember correctly you have about 2 mins to read the questions before you have to go in and answer them so just read through it slowly and there is a copy in the room for you to remind you if you forget. Think about how the question makes you feel and for most of them there is no "wrong" answer. Just be relaxed and talk honestly about what you think. The interviewers are very nice and supportive and you can ask them for prompts... they will often ask you some questions to make sure you fully answer the question.
Hope it helps. Don't over stress about it or spend hours researching..... just know why you want to be in nursing and be true to yourself. Sounds very lame haha but really that is all you need for the interview.
GOOD LUCK!
Thank-you K_mb and Cinnamonlatte! Really helpful (and a little boost of confidence) to know that I haven't been skipping much-needed study sessions for this thing! Big week for lots of people, here's hoping we all have a few hectic weeks ahead of us to keep our minds off the interviews and pending results!!!
Hi Everyone, I was in the last block of interviews on Friday afternoon. The director who debriefed us after the interviews informed us that we will by notified about our admission status as early as next Friday April 22nd (or within a week or so after that date).
Good luck! Fingers crossed!
Too bad we can't all just be accepted at this point... I met so many cool people in my tuesday afternoon block and you guys have provided me so much emotional support throughout the entire application process. Thank yall for keeping my nerves at ease. I really appreciate it, and I hope to see all you forum posters this fall!!
Thanks for the information, Sten. I interviewed on 4/12 and I recalled the director said we could expect to hear back from UBC as soon as 4/22 but thought maybe this was wishful thinking on my part. From other postings on this forum it seems that the envelopes are mailed out in early May (earliest recipient from last year got their's May 10). I'm curious when they call references.
I am keeping myself busy but really hope to learn how my interview went sooner than later. As 4/22 is Good Friday I suspect we may not hear back so soon.
Best of luck to all!

Hey Diffindo_lumos,
Is it possible for you to tell us whether each station has just one person interviewing us, or a group of interviewers?
Thanks!
