Upper years will be selling their books to you guys either the friday of your orientation (before class starts) or the during the first week of your orientation. Of course you will have readings on your first day so if you really feel the need to do these readings ahead of time then go out and buy the book.... I believe that everyone who did that last year regretting not getting the books much cheaper at the consignment sale. But of course it is always personal preference. It would be at most a few chapters which I'm sure would be very easy to catch up on. Again, your preference, but I know ALOT of books are ready for the consignment for you guys. Also.... 15% of that consignment goes to the NUS charity of the year! I recommend you all join the facebook group for the 2011-2013 cohort as people are posting some things up on there about CPR classes, used scrubs, BP cuffs etc.

you will never have to work a stat holiday while you are in school. You guys have a lab on the 7th and you have the 10th off of school. I believe your scheduled should be posted on the nursing website now.

I'm not sure 100% about that but I don't pay anything monthly to MSP. I think it is part of your fees at the beginning. I don't know anyone that pays anything monthly for insurance in the program. Unless it is for the student health services because they have family signed onto their plan.

ubc2011, you will know usually a month in advance where your placement is going to be and if it will be 8 hour or 12 hour shifts. That being said.... I think your first one you guys have might be a little less notice because there is 120 of you to place as oppose to 20 once you break into your smaller groups after the winter holidays. We just found out our placements a day or so ago for the first week of September so we got 6 weeks notice...usually you get 4-5 weeks notice. Again, that CAN always change last minute. It is very confusing with how they have to ask for placements (a computer system puts all the schools into the system and then sends out the placements so it is random and not biased towards any school getting "better" placements). One thing you will learn with this program is that you have to be flexible! Also scrubs.... sidney1013, you have to wear the UBC scrubs you can't wear any kind of scrubs. That being said you could just order the tops and then buy pants the same colour somewhere else which a lot of people do because the scrub pants you have to order are ****** with sizing. But you MUST have the same colour and you MUST have the UBC shirt with the logo etc.

I will be selling my BP cuff for $15 at the book consignment, I'm sure others will do the same as you only need it for the first semester (Sept-Dec) and then you never really use it again.

Hey guys, I received your schedule (as I am making your agenda) and you need your scrubs for September 27th as you have your 2 shadow days around that time. Also, as for text books... WAIT to buy them until you are in school. I know you all are so excited and want to buy them now but it is SO expensive new I think the total cost if you get all is just under $2000. We (the year ahead) sell our old books and have a book consignment within your first week in school so I recommend waiting. Also some of the professors are changing the books so wait until you get your list and wait until you get to school if you can because there will be lots of upper years selling their books for a lot cheaper. Also... the schedule always changes throughout the year as clinical placements change last minute all the time. Keeping jobs is very hard in this program as you might have clinical 2-3 days a week and later in the year that might mean weekends. Just a heads up!

Just a little FYI for those of your ordering scrubs. You need them by mid-october. The tops fit like any top you would buy so if you are a small then a small or x-small will be just fine. The bottoms however are a little tricky as they have NO GIVE in them so although they say a small fits a 8-10, I would say its actually more like a size 6 because if you have hips at all they don't stretch. They are unisex so they are cut straight. That being said, the difference between sizes is huge! I fit a small pant but it is a little tight and the mediums, I am swimming in. SO I just ordered the top and then went out and got scrub pants in the same colour at a random scrub store. Only the top matters because it is the UBC logo, the bottoms don't matter as long as it is the same colour. Also during your first week at school you can try some on but it takes a while for your srubs to come in the mail if you wait until September so make sure you order them by the 2nd week in September for sure!

Congrats to all of you that got in. As for some of your CPR comments, there was a lot of confusion during our year about if you needed your level C or your HCP CPR (health care practitioner). I'm not sure what they have decided this year BUT the nursing undergrad society runs a cheap HCP CPR class during your first few weeks of school... you can register during orientation (your first week) and it was $45 for my year which is a huge discount. So if you don't have your CPR then don't stress about it, you can sign up during orientation and get your HCP CPR (which is better than getting just CPR C anyways). You just need to have all your immunizations and CPR up to date by mid-october when you start clinical. Those of you on the wait list I believe they had 25-30 last year... and apparently lots got in. Congrats again and welcome to nursing!

I have to say I didn't prepare much for the interview process... it is kind of hard to do so. I just kinda looked into what MMI interviews are like and googled for some sample questions. Most of what I found were med school questions so not totally applicable. Really the questions are not super difficult. You don't need to "know" anything. It would be good to have an idea of what nurses do just for yourself but they don't ask specific questions that would require you to have done some research. It really comes down to just knowing yourself, knowing your personal values/morals and knowing what you believe in. Most of the questions are just so the interviewer can get a good sense of who you are. If I remember correctly you have about 2 mins to read the questions before you have to go in and answer them so just read through it slowly and there is a copy in the room for you to remind you if you forget. Think about how the question makes you feel and for most of them there is no "wrong" answer. Just be relaxed and talk honestly about what you think. The interviewers are very nice and supportive and you can ask them for prompts... they will often ask you some questions to make sure you fully answer the question. Hope it helps. Don't over stress about it or spend hours researching..... just know why you want to be in nursing and be true to yourself. Sounds very lame haha but really that is all you need for the interview. hey guys, best of luck to all of you... I am currently half way through the first year at UBC nursing and the interview is not that bad at all. Everyone is super nice and they make you feel very comfortable. I found out I was accepted 1-2 weeks after my interview so just relax, take your time to answer the questions and enjoy it. Once you have an interview your GPA no longer matters and it is just based on your interview mark so CONGRATS for getting this far. For those of you that did not get an interview.... try again next year! Nursing is great!!!

I would call or email and ask if you still haven't heard anything. We do have to respond by the 15th but in my interview they said that they would let everyone know right around the same time if they got in or not and then offer those that they originally declined a position if some come up (people don't accept their offer). Does anyone know what happens next? I sent in my acceptance and paid my deposit, but I have no idea what comes next. Am I suppose to register for classes or does it happen automatically? How do I know what immunizations I need to get before we start? Any info would be great. I live in Ottawa Ontario so I'm a little far from UBC and I just want to make sure I have everything in order before I move out there. Thanks!

I had almost a year of paid hospital experience, but I know there were lots of people that did not have hospital experience at my interview. Like cinnamonlatte wrote in the last post, none of the questions are that specific. They are very general so you can present all experiences you have had and what you think fits. I think if you have enough experience with working with others in different situations then you should be fine. More volunteer work and hospital experience wouldn't hurt though cause it would show that you have been exposed to nurses and you know what to expect and what the profession entails.
