UAB AMNP 2017

Published

Hey everyone! I'm currently a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduate this December and I'll be applying to UAB's AMNP program this Fall for the Spring 2017 class! I hope this group/thread can be used to help each other out through the application process. Also, to anyone currently in the AMNP program, please don't hesitate to drop in and share your application experience! :)

Does anyone know if the interviews can be done via Webcam for out of state people?

I don't see why not. I've heard of people doing skype interviews for graduate programs. That would be great if they did!

Anybody as nervous as me?? As October gets closer I get more ancy!

I am definitely nervous! I got accepted to an ABSN in Miami and turned it down to wait for UAB, lol. So hopefully we all get in!

Y'all I can't even explain how nervous I am haha

I recently applied as well. I'm in Birmingham, and now just waiting. I've heard the same thing ... that they have received a lot more than the usual number of applications, but also that they have the space to make more spots than previous years. In the informational session I attended, they said they had 120 applicants last year, 65 got interviews and 60 were offered spots. So, if the past is an indication (perhaps not since applications went up), if you get an interview, your chances are good.

I was told the same thing in my information session! I was told back in May that they had already received more applications than they had last year! Did they tell you how many they've gotten so far? I'm so incredibly nervous. I wonder if my gpa is competitive, but I haven't been able to really feel it out.

I was told in May that they had received double the number of applications than they had at the same time last year. No idea what that number is at now. I wonder too abt how competitive my GPA is in comparison. At the info session, she said the best indicator of success in the AMNP program is how well you did in A&P and Micro.

Is anyone else here a nontraditional student like me? I finished my undergrad a long time ago. Recently went back to take some pre-reqs. Have held various health-related (but non-hospital jobs) including a short stint in the Peace Corps as a health worker.

Emilyn14, I believe you asked earlier abt community college courses...most of my recent courses were at Jeff State. Bc I have an undergrad degree and only needed to take a few courses (so I was considered a "non-degree seeking student") UAB wouldn't let me register for classes until a week before the term started, at which point they were full. So all of us in BHam just taking a few pre-req courses had to go to Jeff State. I've met a handful of people there taking classes to apply to the AMNP program.

I am a non traditional student! I graduated from college in 2012 and then got my masters in counseling from UAB. I've been working as a substance abuse therapist since last fall. I was a biology major, so thankfully most of my prerequisites were taken care of. I was only lacking a nutrition course and I'm taking it online at Shelton State.

The more everyone says something about how they've had so many applications this year, my anxiety goes up another notch! I really want to do this. I'm just afraid that they'll think that my lack of medical experience is bad (I did a lot of shadowing while in college, but not since then). Maybe they'll consider my counseling career as healthcare! :nailbiting:

You said they told you A&P and micro are the most important? I wonder if an A in anatomy, B+ in physiology and in micro is ok?? Aaahhhhh :bluecry1:

I think your clinical experience will help you tremendously during the selection process. I wouldn't worry about A or B in any prereq :) I think they are mainly concerned with "C's" and average scores like that. I think your shadowing is a good push too. :)

Does anyone feel comfortable sharing their stats?

Has anyone heard anything yet? I don't know how much longer I can wait!

I am graduating in December with a BS. Just to make sure (for your sake!), your A&P courses were prior to 7 years ago right? I just went to the information session and I wanted to be sure the nontraditional students know it has to be within 7 years :)
