UAB AMNP 2017

Published

Hey everyone! I'm currently a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduate this December and I'll be applying to UAB's AMNP program this Fall for the Spring 2017 class! I hope this group/thread can be used to help each other out through the application process. Also, to anyone currently in the AMNP program, please don't hesitate to drop in and share your application experience! :)

Is anyone going to the information session this Wednesday? I want to go one more time and ask a couple of questions :woot:

I wish I could go! But I am in Orlando lol. Let us know if you find out some more information!

@Emily I applied to Emory as well! However UAB is def. my top choice.

Oh me too! Emory is super expensive.

I went to the session again today and got some good info! I'm sure that you've heard some of this before but I'll go through everything she covered. Here are some of the questions and other tidbits:

When do we have to choose which master's specialty we want?

--During the summer term people will come talk to us about the different specialties and tell us what they entail, where we would be able to practice, etc. We give them our two choices in the fall term and and they decide which specialty we will be admitted to. We are guaranteed one of those specialties.

How many applicants do you get and how many are admitted?

--We get about 130 applicants and we accept 68-72.

I've heard that y'all have gotten hundreds of applications this year, is that true? (I asked this one, can you tell?)

--They took applicants from both NursingCAS and UAB Graduate School applications and "there was no way to tell how many we would get." She said they have certainly not gotten hundreds. Yay!!!!!

--Clinicals start after the first 7 weeks.

--We are only guaranteed to be be able to work as an RN in Alabama because of the whole no BSN degree thing.

--There was lots of conversation about prerequisites. All prerequisites have to be done by December in order to enroll in January. Make sure that the classes you have taken comply with UAB's transfer equivalencies. She really emphasized that. UAB - Students - Admissions - Transfer Equivalency Database

Hope this helps!!

This post was so helpful! I was told there were tons of applications... I wonder why that's not the case. But I like those odds better!!! I was also told by people that are in it now that some were granted admissions right after their interview... I'm really nervous since I didn't take the GRE. But, I've been talking to a lot of current students. Also, I'm just ready to find out!!! Week of oct 12 apparently.

I read on some of the older AMNP threads that people were offered admission at their interview as well. Hopefully they will do that again this year! Do you know people in the program? I would like to talk to someone in there too!

I was nervous about not taking the GRE either, but I was told at the session that they'll only look at the GRE if the GPA is under 3.2.

Yes, if your GPA is above 3.2 (overall or last 60 hours) or if you have a masters degree, the GRE is waived. Thank goodness!

What are your stats if you feel comfortable sharing?

I don't mind sharing.

Undergrad (2012)in Biology with a pre-med concentration: 3.6

Masters degree (2015) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling: 3.9

No GRE

I did a lot of shadowing in college but not while I was in grad school. I've worked as a substance abuse therapist in a methadone clinic since last October.

Is anyone in Birmingham and would maybe like to get together??

I am so nervous! I feel like everyone applying is a non traditional student, or already has their masters. I will just now be graduating with a BS! That freaks me out.
