Hey everyone! I'm currently a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduate this December and I'll be applying to UAB's AMNP program this Fall for the Spring 2017 class! I hope this group/thread can be used to help each other out through the application process. Also, to anyone currently in the AMNP program, please don't hesitate to drop in and share your application experience! :)
From what I understand, after phase 1, we will get our RN license in Alabama but no BSN degree. We are only guaranteed to work in Alabama because we won't have a degree. I guess because UAB has this program they've set it up so we can work here. After phase 2, our nurse practitioner license can be obtained in any state. I think that's how it works for phase 2 but I'm not certain! I don't see why we wouldn't be able to get our NP license in any state...
Well, I'm really happy to say that i was just accepted to Emory's Accelerated BSN/ MSN! At least I know I have a back up if I don't get into UAB. I'm anxiously biting my nails awaiting October!
@Emilyn14 Congrats! When did you submit your application to Emory? I'm surprised that they've already started accepting. I'm awaiting on one last transcript and I'll have my application submitted as well. Also, did they interview you? I read online that they 'might' request recommendation letters, too. Ahhh!!
Hi everyone! I'm new to this post but really glad I found it to be in touch with you all and share information. I finished my app on the deadline after deciding to apply just a few days earlier. So hopefully it doesn't feel rushed but I put a lot of time into it in a few days. It seems like everyone finished their apps ages ago.
Anyway, I just have a few questions if anyone has any answers, that would be wonderful!
Does anyone know how often classes are for phase 2?
How heavily is healthcare experience weighed in the decision process?
Can we do clinicals out of state?
Hi kaf23! Phase 2 classes are all online and I think most people take 2 a semester. According to the program head, there are occasions you have to come to campus. They recommend you stay in Alabama during phase 2 of the program, however people can leave as long as it is a state that has signed some kind of online education agreement (I know Colorado is one state that has not). Also, you can practice in another state with your Alabama license as long as it is a state governed by the Nursing Licensure Compact. Though I do believe it is a lot harder to go through credentialing at an out of state hospital as there has been no degree awarded, despite you having a valid nursing license.

Welcome! The classes in phase 2 are part time and online so I think you can do them at your own pace in general. And I don't see why you couldn't do your clinical out of state as long as your state allows you to work as an RN without a BSN degree. There's a PDF on the UAB AMNP page that tells you the overview and also they have info sessions every Wednesday in the nursing building at noon!
