Hey everyone! I'm currently a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduate this December and I'll be applying to UAB's AMNP program this Fall for the Spring 2017 class! I hope this group/thread can be used to help each other out through the application process. Also, to anyone currently in the AMNP program, please don't hesitate to drop in and share your application experience! :)
I'm new to allnurses and this thread has been so helpful. I'm applying to a lot of direct entry MSN and dnp programs for this coming spring, summer and fall. I also got the "save the dates" email. I'm glad someone posted that we will find out on the 12th, or else I'd be a nervous wreck.
Hey guys, nice to meet some other UAB AMNP applicants! I'm 28 and live in Houston, TX and graduated with my bachelors in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M in 2010. Ultimately will be going for PMHNP. Worried about my chances for this program. Here are some stats:
Cumulative undergrad GPA: 3.72
UAB AMNP Pre-Req GPA: ~3.8
Medical experience: Active EMT throughout college, international medical mission trips in South America, was pre-med during college and completed academic internships at medical schools (Baylor College of Medicine and UTMB SOM) and rotated/volunteered in various departments at Texas Children's Hospital and John Sealy Hospital along with numerous affiliated clinics for the clinical portion of these internships. Also did volunteer ER clinical research and a neuropsychology research internship at Emory University. Have volunteered in departments such as the ER, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, pathology, plastic surgery, etc. Now for the past two years I have been working full-time as a Psychiatric Technician/Behavorial Health Associate in the nursing department at a psychiatric hospital in Houston, mainly on the chemical dependency, adolescent, and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU). I also act as a preceptor/trainer for corporate to train staff at newly opened company hospitals around the US and am the hospitals CPR/CPI Instructor.
Other experience: College tutor on and off for many years, worked in construction (supervisory and administrative/management positions) for a couple years, worked in Seattle for a company subcontracted out by the FDA to perform pre-clinical and phase I clinical trials for experimental pharmaceuticals for three years, and also worked in the oil field in Houston as a Core Analyst before getting back into the medical field at the psych hospital.
I am extremely passionate about Psychiatry and the mental health field in general and truly hope to establish myself as a Psych NP and become a leader and agent of change in the field, whether through clinical work or as leadership/management of a psych facility in the future. Also interested in someday teaching university-level students.
In my UAB AMNP essay, I had to take up quite a bit of space explaining why I ultimately declined acceptance to medical school many years ago and how I instead chose advanced practice nursing as my professional goal. This was difficult due to the 500 word limit on the essay. I just hope I conveyed everything I needed to!
So what do y'all think my chances are? I am only applying to two direct entry MSN/NP programs (UAB and Ohio State), but I really have my heart set on UAB. I submitted everything on 08/06/16 but I never received the recent informational email everyone is talking about. So I emailed the program yesterday and asked if everything in my application was complete/submitted and she said yes all is complete and my file is pending committee review around mid-October. That is all the information I received.

Less than a month away!! I'm glad we are all keeping each other updated. The email we got yesterday gave me anxiety times 12, I too also thought it was an invitation.
