UAB AMNP Cohort 2018 Applicants
I'm a member of the current cohort with RFronsee! What I've read so far in the posts above is that you'll most likely be very competitive in the application process. To the person that is working as a CNA, you are probably a shoo in. Simply because you are currently working in a hostpital, and you KNOW what you are getting into in this field. Essay-wise they want to see that you know what nurses/NPs do and that you want to be one. GPA is important bc the first year is an academically grueling program. We have people in our cohort who have never struggled with grades, who struggle in the first year. Part of the challenge is that you are working long clinical hours (nearly as many as a full time job) and still have multiple lecture days per week, plus a big test every week, and endless assignments due. There is never enough time to study. I mean, I study at stop lights(!), if that is an indication. So, they shoot for high achievers. And even with high achievers, there are a handful that leave the program each year. All that said, I wouldn't stress about having a GPA under 3.5. FWIW, I had an overall 3.2 GPA (mostly from my BA degree), and a 3.7 pre-req GPA. I did not have in-hospital medical experience but have worked for medical non-profits. Also, they do look at all your GPAs, but I think they really hone in on the pre-req GPA. Hope this helps! And good luck. The waiting was the hardest part.

Portage Learning STATISTICS
Access to material was typically w/in a day of signing up. You have to take a pre-test at the beginning of each course. It is NOT graded, just to see your knowledge on the subject. After that is reviewed, you can see the modules. I was almost always in on day 1.

Tests were graded usually in a few hours, occasionally it took until Monday if it was a weekend. My instructor (first name was Matt I believe) was really helpful and encouraging. I really liked him. I'm not sure if there are multiple stats instructors or just him?? But he was great.

I did the class in 7 weeks. It took a bit of effort to get it done on that timeframe. I did it during the summer while my kids were not in school, so it seemed a bit stressful. But only bc I had a self-imposed deadline.

I thought it was a good class. It wasn't hard to make an A, but wouldn't say it was a breeze either. I worked all the modules backwards and forwards. Carried a high A throughout the course.

Done. It's up!

UAB AMNP 2017
At the risk of jinxing myself (knock on wood), but since final details are being worked out for people (like moving across the country!), would y'all want to form a FB group for the 2017 cohort? I'll call it UAB AMNP 2017 Applicants, to be changed soon to UAB AMNP 2017 Cohort. If any of us do not make the final cut, we could remove ourselves from the group. Thoughts?

I asked that question at the info meeting and both phases are considered graduate. Thus the first year is graduate tuition, even though undergrad level courses.

Really need a variety of clinical experiences to confirm, but right now I am interested in FNP or adult acute/clinical, or possibly peds acute/clinical.

I remember from my informational session that last cycle, 70ish were invited to interview and 65ish were offered spots. My numbers may be a tad off as I am going from memory. Also, this year could be different w more applicants, etc. Good luck to all!

I don't think there is a "science GPA". At the info meetings I attended, I was told they calculate 3 GPAs: overall GPA, foundational GPA, and last 60 hrs GPA. Was also told the best indicator of success in the AMNP program is how well a student did in micro and A&P.

Wildforest apartments or any of the complexes near Brookwood Hospital are a great location. This is in Homewood, not far from UAB.

I live in Vestavia, right on the Homewood/Vestavia border. My house is 10mins from the nursing school. There are a lot of apartments (mostly students) in Homewood.
