UAB AMNP Cohort 2018 Applicants
I'm a member of the current cohort with RFronsee! What I've read so far in the posts above is that you'll most likely be very competitive in the application process. To the person that is working as a CNA, you are probably a shoo in. Simply because you are currently working in a hostpital, and you KNOW what you are getting into in this field. Essay-wise they want to see that you know what nurses/NPs do and that you want to be one. GPA is important bc the first year is an academically grueling program. We have people in our cohort who have never struggled with grades, who struggle in the first year. Part of the challenge is that you are working long clinical hours (nearly as many as a full time job) and still have multiple lecture days per week, plus a big test every week, and endless assignments due. There is never enough time to study. I mean, I study at stop lights(!), if that is an indication. So, they shoot for high achievers. And even with high achievers, there are a handful that leave the program each year. All that said, I wouldn't stress about having a GPA under 3.5. FWIW, I had an overall 3.2 GPA (mostly from my BA degree), and a 3.7 pre-req GPA. I did not have in-hospital medical experience but have worked for medical non-profits. Also, they do look at all your GPAs, but I think they really hone in on the pre-req GPA. Hope this helps! And good luck. The waiting was the hardest part.

Portage Learning STATISTICS
Access to material was typically w/in a day of signing up. You have to take a pre-test at the beginning of each course. It is NOT graded, just to see your knowledge on the subject. After that is reviewed, you can see the modules. I was almost always in on day 1.

Tests were graded usually in a few hours, occasionally it took until Monday if it was a weekend. My instructor (first name was Matt I believe) was really helpful and encouraging. I really liked him. I'm not sure if there are multiple stats instructors or just him?? But he was great.

I did the class in 7 weeks. It took a bit of effort to get it done on that timeframe. I did it during the summer while my kids were not in school, so it seemed a bit stressful. But only bc I had a self-imposed deadline.

I thought it was a good class. It wasn't hard to make an A, but wouldn't say it was a breeze either. I worked all the modules backwards and forwards. Carried a high A throughout the course.

UAB AMNP 2017
At the risk of jinxing myself (knock on wood), but since final details are being worked out for people (like moving across the country!), would y'all want to form a FB group for the 2017 cohort? I'll call it UAB AMNP 2017 Applicants, to be changed soon to UAB AMNP 2017 Cohort. If any of us do not make the final cut, we could remove ourselves from the group. Thoughts?

I asked that question at the info meeting and both phases are considered graduate. Thus the first year is graduate tuition, even though undergrad level courses.

Really need a variety of clinical experiences to confirm, but right now I am interested in FNP or adult acute/clinical, or possibly peds acute/clinical.

UAB AMNP 2017
I remember from my informational session that last cycle, 70ish were invited to interview and 65ish were offered spots. My numbers may be a tad off as I am going from memory. Also, this year could be different w more applicants, etc. Good luck to all!

That's what I was told, futurenurselove.

I don't think there is a "science GPA". At the info meetings I attended, I was told they calculate 3 GPAs: overall GPA, foundational GPA, and last 60 hrs GPA. Was also told the best indicator of success in the AMNP program is how well a student did in micro and A&P.

Wildforest apartments or any of the complexes near Brookwood Hospital are a great location. This is in Homewood, not far from UAB.

I live in Vestavia, right on the Homewood/Vestavia border. My house is 10mins from the nursing school. There are a lot of apartments (mostly students) in Homewood.

I can't imagine that you would not get in, vvandenn! Great experience and great GPAs! I wouldn't sweat it.

I got it too. I had to read it very carefully to make sure it wasn't an invitation to interview. Lol. But good to know when the dates are exactly.

Hi kaf23! Phase 2 classes are all online and I think most people take 2 a semester. According to the program head, there are occasions you have to come to campus. They recommend you stay in Alabama during phase 2 of the program, however people can leave as long as it is a state that has signed some kind of online education agreement (I know Colorado is one state that has not). Also, you can practice in another state with your Alabama license as long as it is a state governed by the Nursing Licensure Compact. Though I do believe it is a lot harder to go through credentialing at an out of state hospital as there has been no degree awarded, despite you having a valid nursing license. ://www.ncsbn.org/NLC_Map.pdf

Thank you both! I honestly go back and forth bn thinking my life experience will weigh a lot in this process or not. I have been somewhat confident in the past but now I waver. Maybe they want more in-hospital experience, or want higher GPAs. Who knows?

Most of my pre-reqs were taken in the last 18months, but previously graduated w a BA 15 years ago. My recent courses were: A&P, micro, chem, dev psych, nutrition and stats. I don't mind sharing my stats, Emilyn14: pre-req GPA ~3.91 last 60 hrs ~3.65 overall GPA ~3.36 Wish my overall was higher but most of that is from my undergrad 15 years ago. Have a 4.0 in all classes since my BA degree. Hoping they weigh my more recent coursework higher than my earlier. I did not take the GRE. I don't have direct hospital/clinic experience. However a lot of years in health-related jobs...heart surg coordinator for a non profit helping orphans in China, patient education conferences for a health-related nonprofit on UAB campus, health worker in Peace Corps, medical team participant to orphanages China, and a couple summers volunteering in a hospital when I was in high school, but it was so long ago they didn't keep computer records!! ) That made me feel pretty old. I also have 2 kiddos who had medical needs at the beginning so experience advocating for them in the healthcare realm.

Is anyone else here a nontraditional student like me? I finished my undergrad a long time ago. Recently went back to take some pre-reqs. Have held various health-related (but non-hospital jobs) including a short stint in the Peace Corps as a health worker. Emilyn14, I believe you asked earlier abt community college courses...most of my recent courses were at Jeff State. Bc I have an undergrad degree and only needed to take a few courses (so I was considered a "non-degree seeking student") UAB wouldn't let me register for classes until a week before the term started, at which point they were full. So all of us in BHam just taking a few pre-req courses had to go to Jeff State. I've met a handful of people there taking classes to apply to the AMNP program.

I was told in May that they had received double the number of applications than they had at the same time last year. No idea what that number is at now. I wonder too abt how competitive my GPA is in comparison. At the info session, she said the best indicator of success in the AMNP program is how well you did in A&P and Micro.

UAB AMNP 2017
I recently applied as well. I'm in Birmingham, and now just waiting. I've heard the same thing ... that they have received a lot more than the usual number of applications, but also that they have the space to make more spots than previous years. In the informational session I attended, they said they had 120 applicants last year, 65 got interviews and 60 were offered spots. So, if the past is an indication (perhaps not since applications went up), if you get an interview, your chances are good.
