UAB AMNP 2017

Published

Hey everyone! I'm currently a student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduate this December and I'll be applying to UAB's AMNP program this Fall for the Spring 2017 class! I hope this group/thread can be used to help each other out through the application process. Also, to anyone currently in the AMNP program, please don't hesitate to drop in and share your application experience! :)

Yes I would be moving from Seattle. I don't know what housing prices are like in Atlanta but in Seattle they are outrageously expensive so looking at Birmingham rentals was really quite nice since the cost of living is sooooo much lower. Anyone from there, are there any towns outside the city that might be a good place to live? I'm just a bit tired of living in the city and was thinking about something more rural but not too long of a commute to the city

Birmingham is pretty spread out, so if you want somewhere rural you'll have to live pretty far outside the city. Maybe a 30-45 minute commute? Birmingham is a great place though! I love it here. There are several neighborhood/suburb areas that are close, safe, and really cute. Downtown, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, and Hoover are the main areas. Downtown can be a little dangerous just because it's downtown, but there are some nice apartments (usually pricey though). Homewood is my favorite personally. It's an adorable area with a lot of old, charming houses. It's fairly expensive but there are definitely some affordable options. I live in Vestavia Hills, which has The Summit aka the best shopping center ever haha. It's a really cute area with old and new houses. Hoover is kind of like Vestavia but it feels a little busier to me because all the interstates run right through the middle of it. Mountain Brook is where all the rich people live. Like, multi million dollar houses on every corner... but it's beautiful! All of the areas have great shopping, restaurants, houses, and apartments. None of them feel like you're "in the city" in my opinion. Except downtown of course. You really can't go wrong anywhere! Hope this helps!

I live in Fultondale, which is like 10-15 minutes away from UAB. The complex I live at is right next to the interstate so it doesn't take me much time at all to go wherever I need to go. Fultondale's a pretty quiet city, but it's not out of the way of anything...we have a target, Winn Dixie, some good restaurants, and Walmart is right up the street.

My complex is really quiet too...I've been here about a year and some change and I have no complaints other than them doing construction during the day when I sleep 🙄

Thanks for all your input!

I will be looking for housing options as well! I'll be coming from Orlando. I want to probably live either close to UAB or maybe in a safer part of downtown lol. Hopefully we all get in and maybe some of us can even be roommates? I think that would probably make getting through this program a lot easier...

I think that would be a great idea. One of the reasons why I wouldn't want to live on campus or with someone who is not a nursing student is because they wouldn't understand my schedule or the amount of time I would have to spend studying. So I think rooming with other nursing students could be a good idea.

I live near Homewood! Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend trying to live downtown unless you're willing to spend an extra chunk to live at either the Moretti or the Venue! Southside and downtown are known for being sketchy and having tons of break ins. There was actually just an armed robbery yesterday. Be safe!

I agree with Emily. Downtown is pretty spotty unless you want to spend a small fortune for a good place  I live in Vestavia and it takes me about 10 minutes to get to UAB!

Could you all name some apartment complexes in good areas that you would recommend

I live in Vestavia, right on the Homewood/Vestavia border. My house is 10mins from the nursing school. There are a lot of apartments (mostly students) in Homewood.

Wildforest apartments or any of the complexes near Brookwood Hospital are a great location. This is in Homewood, not far from UAB.

Wildforest, The Oaks at Lakeshore, any of the Crowne complexes, The Hill, 4700 Colonnade, 150 Summit, and Colony Woods are all good. There are tons more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Those are all in the Homewood and Vestavia areas.

Can we please pause for a moment and talk about how it's October 1st which means.... ONLY 12 more days until we find out about interviews!!!!!!!
