I actually live in the same city where I work and I almost always get asked where I live. When they realize I live in the same city as them, they want to know what street. I never give this information but does anyone have any good responses to this personal question?

Recently a very weird person who worked in housekeeping at my job followed me home. Appeared in my driveway. I called the police. NOBODY coworker or patient gets to know where I live!

A particularly nasty ex-client pressed for my exact address twice, once after I stopped working there. I told the agency under no circumstances were they to release my address because I did not put it past the nut job to send some of her "friends" out for no good. I've had enough problems with ex clients who were not too lazy to find out where I live with a little effort on their part.

Oh, and BTW, I have decided not to seek work at a very convenient facility near me because this client works there. I am avoiding the nut. Pretty bad when someone like this can affect one's livelihood.

I usually just say I live between x and y. Or I live in x. If pressed or if some else says oh I live on so and so road, I usually say Im closer to x then that, or oh you must live close by

Now that I am moving to a small town, this will be interesting. I usually respond, "I live nearby" or something vague, and change the subject to another topic. I am careful to keep personal details neutral around pts.

When patients ask where I'm from, I'll tell them. I happen to be one of the few RNs on my floor that are from the same town that the hospital is located in. If they're from the area, they generally ask where I live. In which I say, "near the xxx Wal-Mart (because, you know, with a population of 120K and being twin cities, we need three of them). Which is actually where my parents are. Conversation usually drops at that point.

Where do you live?

At home!

And where is your home?

Cloud 7!

I am saying this with a charming smile and the patient don't ask me more details.

I tell them I live in "xxxxx" (town, same as where the hospital is located) "just up the road actually". (in reality, its up a road, round a corner, up another road or two, a few more corners....). I dont think they are interested, they are just making conversation. I've never been pressed more. If I was, I would just give the name of the major (and LONG!) street that is the main one in the town and pretty much ALL roads lead off from it and say "it's just off from xxx road".

Unless where you live is somehow pertinent to your patient's plan of care (I doubt it), you're under no obligation to disclose your address. In fact, I fail to see why this question even needs to asked. How about "sorry but it's none of your business" or if you're really feeling nice "down the road." Sheesh, the things people worry over or ask advice about.

It's creepy that they would want to know your exact street. I live in "Mayberry" and have a very common/well known maiden and married name. Not to mention that my family has strong genes so my face is always familiar to at least half of my patients. With that said, when "Where do you live?" is asked of me, I always say "across town"; and that's all they need to know. Some of the inquiries are harmless I'm sure but you never know which ones aren't.
