TWU Dallas Spring 2011

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hey guys! I recently got my acceptance letter for TWU Nursing school in Dallas! :) I decided to make an account to see if who else has been admitted to the Dallas campus. im soooo nervous!

What a long day!

No kidding! I thought that the lectures were never going to end! On a good note I did have fun (even after sitting for almost 6 hours) and the information was interesting. Really looking forward to the Pharm class -- not freaking out about it (yet).. ;)

To everyone in here, may your week/semester be productive, successful, and cause minimum stress!

Hey does anyone know what room concepts lab is in tomorrow (somewhere on the 4th floor I'm sure)? I seemed to have missed this information :uhoh21: Thanks!

So J1s...How is it going so far this semester? Have you had a clinical yet? What are your impressions of the program, professors, homework, classmates, etc.? I am a TWU Fall 2011 hopeful and I'm just so curious about what the first semester of the nursing program will really be like.

Personally, classes are going great for me. No on has had clinical at this time but some groups have attended their hospital's orientation (I have mine next week).

The program overall can seem a bit overwhelming with the amount of reading that you need to do -- particularly in concepts (at least for me). I am taking Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Concepts, and Assessment right now and it takes up all of my time. One thing that is stressed by the professors is how much time/activities you will have to give up to do this program. In my opinion, if you have great time management, then you are already on a good path. Just make sure that you read all assigned papers and if you feel it is necessary, attend tutoring if offered (which they do for Pharmacology). Students here are very friendly -- it amazed me the number of students that smiled to me just passing them by in the hallways. You are not going to "click" with everyone, but just be friendly -- which is what I do!

If you are able to take Pathophysiology before then do so! It will give you more time to study/prepare for your other courses. Dr. ****** teaches this course. She makes is well known from the beginning that this is a Biology course being taught to nursing students! Her notes are a bit frenetic for me but to other's they seem to help. Reading the book is a must for her class as well as answering the questions in the back of a workbook.

The one course that seems to be "difficult" for everyone is Pharmacology with Dr. *****. I really like her teaching and the outlines that she gives as lecture notes -- easy to follow and not too cluttered with extraneous information. Dr. ****** LOVES taking questions from her students and encourages us to stop by her office if we need clarification on anything.

Ms. ***** teaches the Assessment course. Our lectures are online and we attend lab based on a calendar that is posted (it is to keep the number of students on campus down since parking can be brutal). She is nice and willing to answer any questions that you have as well. For Assessment there are several people that teach the lab portion. I can't comment on the lab because tomorrow is my first lab day. :)

Concepts is led by Mrs. ******** who is a riot! Very outgoing and enthusiastic about what she is teaching. This is the class where you learn how to make beds, bathe patients, restraints, etc. There is a lecture portion as well as a weekly lab. My lab instructor is AWESOME but if you ask others, I am sure they will say the same thing!

I wish you the best of luck in applying to the program! Now, I have to get back to my studying! LOL

I agree with everything fantasydragon just said!!!

Just Curious fantasydragon who is your lab instructor? Mine is ****** and I love her!!!

Back to studying as well!

friendly terms of service reminder

some posts have been edited to comply with the terms of service.

per the terms of service of this site, please do not post names, initials, or contact information of professors or other school officials on the public board. it is better to communicate this type of information via the private message system. you will be able to send pm's once you have 15 posts.

as stated in the terms of service:

while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:

  1. it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
  2. while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
  3. please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.

the best to all of you! thank you for your cooperation.

Fantasydragon, what an awesome post! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. It's really nice to hear for those of us still in the dark.

I am taking Pathophysiology right now in Denton with a good professor so I hope that helps me in the Fall when I DO get in :) I am confident that I will get in.

More questions for your next study break: I'll be interested to hear how your clinicals go if you don't mind posting when you get a chance. Do you know yet what hopital you are in? With the Assessment lecture online and having Patho done by the time I start, how many days a week do you think I'll be at Parkland? I live in north fort worth so I'm hoping to get my clinical at Baylor Grapevine or somewhere in FW if possible. How did the locations get assigned to you guys?

LOL I keep forgetting about posting names (not a big forum person). I will send you the name of mine in a PM.

You are in luck! I just happened to check the forum! Make sure you stay positive about getting into this program!

Ahh...clinicals. :D This first day wasn't too bad. We pair into groups of two and complete a patient history on them (age, sex, facial features, skin color, gait, etc.), take blood pressures, respiratory rate, resting pulse, and temperature. Then we are able to get into groups, repeat what we just learned and critique one another. It is a great way to practice and get feedback. Sometimes it may feel that you are walking blind but always ask your professor if you have any questions. That is what they are there for! :) I tend to get nervous around a lot of people but am happy to say that the group I am in is AWESOME! Everyone is friendly and willing to help you if needed! Well, I can say that for just about everyone on campus! :)

Once you complete Patho, you will most likely be on campus for 3 days. This is an example schedule:

Monday: Patho 0830-1130

Tuesday: Pharm 0900-1200

Concepts Lecture 1300-1600

Wednesday: Assessment Lab 0800-1600

Thursday: Concepts Lab/Hospital 0800-1400

There are multiple Assessment sections. We were given a calendar marked with the days that we attend Assessment lab and the days that we don't. You will not be attending Assessment every week. So, you may have class/lab Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday one week then next week have class/lab only on Tuesday and Thursday. Every week you will have Concepts Lab or the Hospital.

I don't know how they chose clinical assignments. Sorry! I was one of the lucky ones to get the hospital of their choice and didn't have to speak with any of the professors about changing it. Maybe one of the other posters can tell you...? There is only so much I can honestly tell you about entering into the program without misinforming you. I didn't really worry about how many points I had, what my grades were in the four "main" courses, etc. For me, I just put my application in after completing my courses and crossed my fingers!

I hope that answered some/all of your questions! If not, repost again and (fingers crossed) another one of the students can fill you in! Have a great week!

So quiet in here...

How are things!? Fully in the swing of clinical and (ugh) care plans. I've heard a lot of people have dropped concepts though. Everyone here doing ok? I'm not sure it's turned out to be what I expected but for the most part I'm enjoying it. Who needs sleep anyway, right?

I am applying to the Spring 2012 program. Can any of you guys give me suggestions, tips, advice on getting in? What were your GPAs and TEAS scores???
