TWU Dallas Spring 2011

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hey guys! I recently got my acceptance letter for TWU Nursing school in Dallas! :) I decided to make an account to see if who else has been admitted to the Dallas campus. im soooo nervous!

Hi guys..just a few things that i thought yall should know..

-TNSA offers cpr classes before the semester starts..i recommend taking it with them because the class is pretty laid back and the exam at the end is taken as a class

-the total cost for JUST the books your J1 semester is $1200. Again this is just for books, you can buy your books used but you won't be saving that much. I realized this a few weeks ago, but all the books are in the library, there are several copies of each book. We barely used any of the books, they were seriously a waste of money. The only book you really need is the Assessment book, and Taylors clincal lab book. I don't know anyone that looked at their other books more than 5 times.

-You have to wear a white scrub top and maroon scrub pants for lab and clinicals, they can be any style and any shade of dark maroon is fine

-the scrubs that tnsa sells are huge

-all the equipment that you will need will be given to you at school so don't go buying bp cuffs and penlights

-try to take patho before you start nursing school, the class is really really time consuming

-take patho with Macarther, she gives at least a 10 point curve each test

-don't ever be late to class, you will regret it

sorry guys thats all i can think of right now..let me know if you have any questions.

pinkle2525, thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. $1200 is something I definitely do not have right now. I would appreciate it if you could go more in detail on which books were totally useless. The syllabus for pharmacology says we need to read 8 chapters or something before the start of class. Just wondering if that was one of the books I have to buy or at least rent.

How did you all like orientation on Friday?!?! Still trying to digest everything but I had a blast! Lots of information and lots of "be sure this is what you want to do" was thrown out! I completely despise the parking situation but such is life and I am just going to deal with it. The book situation is CRAZY  but I am just going to get the package as soon as I can. I did purchase the Pathophysiology book from a J2 for $50 but she did not have the lab book. Not looking forward to shelling all of this money out, but the rewards are going to be awesome!! Hope everyone has a great holiday season and if you all need anything let me know!

OMG fantasydragon, my mind felt like it was going to explode lol I'm really not looking forward taking 16 credit hrs next semester!

Does anyone know if we need a stethoscope? They didn't mention it.

I talked to a couple of J2s & they said pharm was by far the hardest class. I'm gonna crack open the pharm book & start reading those 8 chapters we have to read before class begins!

LOL I don't think any of us are looking forward to that. I was crazy enough to take 18 hours when I got my first degree and told myself I would never do it again (yet here I am only 2 hours shy of that)...LOL I think we will be ok...I constantly tell myself to just take it a day at a time and not freak out about the courses. :)

In regards to the stethoscope, on the back of the Nursing Assessment paper we received during orientation, it says that we need to have a stethoscope before the first day of class. There are also recommendations of brands listed. Also note not to purchase one with double tubing (she bolded that...lol). I am not sure how much they cost since I got my stethoscope for free. :yeah:

Oh wow thanks fantasydragon!I need to go through my packet again lol Bc I didn't even see that :)

LOL No problem! I think I have read each sheet regarding courses at least 3 times already...lol

BTW...note to everyone. Make sure to check that your immunizations have been posted in Pioneer Portal. I gave my copies to them at orientation last Friday, then received a letter today saying that I was missing half of my immunizations. I took another copy to the Health Services in Denton today and spoke with the coordinator who is in charge of our immunizations -- very nice lady! If you want to make sure that they "get" it and live close to Denton, drop your copes off at the Health Services in Denton. Check to make sure they will be open next week though... Or, you can mail/fax your copies.

FYI: Several of the ISBNs on the class sheets they gave us at orientation DO NOT match up with those provided in the package from Majors. A friend and I went through it tonight and it is just craziness.I don't know which one is wrong, but be aware that no matter which route you go to get your books, you may not have all the right stuff!

I had the same issue when I went to majors a few weeks ago but the person I talked to said the right books would be ordered and it is like this every year. For some reason twu doesn't give us the right or updated list but it is given to majors. At least that is what one lady told me over there. I hope she wasn't lying to me :/

That is insane! I understand encouraging the package, but to give incorrect info for those who choose otherwise is just frustrating!

I only went with the package because I got an iPad for Christmas. I plan on loading up the ebooks that come with the package on my iPad so I can have access to them at all times without having to physically lug all of the books around. I can already hear my back thanking me. However, I still don't feel happy paying all that cash for books...

I found the updated book list that is in the package from Major's. http://www.majorsbooks.com/p-1321-twudallas-nursing-spring-2011.aspx

All the books noted on our syllabuses are on that list so if you bought the package you are good to go. My only concern is when they will call me to let me know I can pick the package up. I ordered my stuff a week before christmas and still nothing.
